Would you vote for a candidate who had a recent DUI?
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 09:23 PM by undeterred
Would you vote for someone who had a DUI while they were in elected office? It happened to our Attorney General in Wisconsin. Another elected official is running against her in the Democratic primary.

This person has been a fantastic AG, and she also showed tremendous courage in facing breast cancer, with she was diagnosed with shortly after the drunk driving incident. Fot me the good outweighs the bad and I will vote for her.

In the past I have held this against candidates.

1. At this point, I'd vote for a Dem who was puking vodka and cheetos on me.
Because the republicans are still worse.

Otherwise, I might have to ask you to puke something else.

4. Sure
Anyone can get a DUI. Most DUI's are borderline cases. Until we have decent public transport (which entails more dense development) in this country, we will have people driving home from bars, and every single one of them is susceptible to a DUI. People get DUI's after having one drink.

8. Whats the
good and whats the bad? Is the good breast cancer and the bad DUI I'm confused? If I were and elected official I would sure as hell act like one. If I wanted to drink I would have someone drive me around. If there were another Dem running against her I would consider voting for him or her in a big way.

I'm surprised the state doesn't provide one for her.

11. Although I would weigh many factors that would help me to
decide whom I was going to vote for, I do think that those in the public eye need to show some sense of responsibility for their actions. For instance they could hire a driver if they were going to be someplace where they would be drinking and would have to find a way to go home. Driving under the influence of anything that can compromise your motor skills should be a no no in anyone's daily life.

12. No
Not in the primaries. The repukes would run with that in the general election.

If it was for the general election I would vote for them because they were my party's choice.

18. Pretty minor if we benchmark against typical Republican corruption.
I'd put it into a larger perspective.

19. No, I don't think so
I don't think someone who shows that kind of lack of judgment and concern for others would be worthy of my vote.

Getting into a car and driving after you've had any alcohol to drink is dangerous. You risk not only your own life, but the lives of others.

Good person or not - someone who can't/won't get a cab or someone else to drive, after they've had a drink - should not be making the decisions that affect our lives.

If a political candidate cared that little for him/herself and others, as to get into a car under any kind of drug or alcohol influence, I could not trust that person with my life in a leadership position. After all, when we vote for leaders, we ARE trusting our lives to them.

How can an Attorney General keep their job when they have a DUI conviction? They are in charge of overseeing DUI prosecutions.

23. If I were going to decide to vote for them without that I wouldn't let
that be the sole factor against voting for them.

Plenty of people have done it and not gotten caught. You could be voting for those people.
