New Anti-War Springsteen Song Available: "Bring 'Em Home"!

HEAR BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN'S NEW TRACK, "BRING 'EM HOME"

Click on the links below to hear Bruce Springsteen's version of Pete Seeger's "Bring 'Em Home (If You Love Your Uncle Sam)".

Springsteen recorded the album with a large ensemble. The musicians on the record are Springsteen (guitar, harmonica, B3 organ and percussion), Sam Bardfeld (violin), Art Baron (tuba) Frank Bruno (guitar), Jeremy Chatzy (upright bass), Mark Clifford (banjo), Larry Eagle (drums and percussion), Charles Giordano (B3 organ, piano and accordion), Ed Manion (saxophone), Mark Pender (trumpet), Richie "La Bamba" Rosenberg (trombone) and Soozie Tyrell (violin). Lisa Lowell, Patti Scialfa, Springsteen, Pender, Tyrell, and Rosenberg contribute backing vocals.

Penned by Pete Seeger during the Vietnam War, "Bring 'Em Home" quickly achieved anthem status in the anti-war movement. Springsteen first recorded the song in January 2006 and added a final lead vocal during his European tour, at a studio in Oslo, Norway. His poignant rendition, performed frequently on the Seeger Sessions tour, adds several new verses and connects the song to a much earlier topical song, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." "Bring 'Em Home" was written in 1965 and originally released on Pete's 1971 Columbia album, "Young vs. Old."

7. The Lyrics: "It will make the politicians sad I know..."
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 11:47 PM by Hissyspit
If you love this land of the free
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
Bring 'em back from overseas
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
It will make the politicians sad I know
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
They wanna tangle with their foe
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
They want to test their grand theories
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
With the blood of you and me
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
Now, we'll give no more brave young lives
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
For the gleam in someone's eyes
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home

(accordian/violin solos)

The men will cheer and the boys will shout
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
Yeah, and we will all turn out
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
The church bells will ring with joy
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
To welcome our darling girls and boys
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
We will lift our voice in song
Bring 'em home, bring 'em home
Yeah, when Johnny comes marchin' home

Bring 'em home
Bring 'em home

Bring 'em back from overseas
If you love this land of the free
Bring 'em back from overseas
Bring 'em home
Bring 'em home

If You Love Your Uncle Sam

One of Pete Seeger's most outspoken songs.
Seeger wrote the song in 1965 to protest US involvement in Vietnam.
The song was used at rallies throughout the late '60's.
Barbara Dane recorded it with new lyrics at a rally with G.I.s from Fort Hood in 1969;
Tom WInslow also recorded it in 1969.

Seeger's original recording of "Bring Them Home" appeared on the Columbia album "Young vs. Old" in 1971;
although that album was nominated for a grammy award, it is currently out of print,
as is Winslow's recording.
Dane's recording is available from Smithsonian Folkways on the album "FTA! Songs of the GI Resistance."
According to Dane's liner notes: "FTA - Army Version: Fun, Travel and Adventure." GI Version: "Fuck the Army!"

In 2003, Pete Seeger participated in the recording of "Seeds: The Songs of Pete Seeger, Vol III,"
the third volume of the Appleseed series honoring Seeger's music
(Bruce Springsteen's recording of "We Shall Overcome" appears on the first volume).
With Ani DiFranco, Steve Earle and Billy Bragg,
Seeger recorded a new version of "Bring Them Home," with updated lyrics to address the invasion of Iraq.

Bruce Springsteen has been performing a modified version of "Bring Them Home" during "The Seeger Sessions" tour.

From Pete Seeger's 2003 recording of "Bring Them Home":

I may be right
I may be wrong
Bring 'em home
Bring 'em home

But I got a right to sing this song
Bring 'em home
Bring 'em home

Isn't that the wonderful thing about America?
You got a right to be wrong!

Where else in the world can you do it like we can do it here?

Back in 1965 when I first wrote this song, it was,
"If you love your Uncle Sam, support our boys in Vietnam, Bring 'em home."

If you all sing that chorus with me, we can raise the ceiling a little higher.

Hooray! for the United States of America and the right to speak your mind.

10. much as I love Bruce and what he's doing to recognize Pete's music . . .
Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 01:56 AM by OneBlueSky
and make it accessible to a new generation, I really like Pete's version of this song better . . .

not complaining, mind you . . . it's just that the original was more emphatic and conveyed a real sense of urgency . . . Bruce's version, to me, is a bit too laid back and too mellow to rise to the challenge of what needs to be done (i.e. bringing them home) . . .

I hope this gets a lot of play, though -- along with Pete's original . . .
