Beer ingredient may fight prostate cancer

June 12, 2006

CORVALLIS, Ore. --

A main ingredient in beer may help prevent prostate cancer and enlargement,
according to a new study. But researchers say don't rush out to stock the
refrigerator because the ingredient is present in such small amounts that
a person would have to drink more than 17 beers to benefit.

Oregon State University researchers say the compound xanthohumol, found in hops,
inhibits a specific protein in the cells along the surface of the prostate gland.
The protein acts like a signal switch that turns on a variety of animal and human
cancers, including prostate cancer.

Cancer typically results from uncontrolled cell reproduction and growth.
Xanthohumol belongs to a group of plant compounds called flavonoids, which can
trigger the programmed cell death that controls growth, researchers say.

2. Hey, great cure if true,
But at seventeen beers, it probably wouldn't be wise to take the cure on a daily basis. However there's always weekends:toast:

3. I heard another study
That said they fed rats a large amount of chili peppers and it shrunk their prostate cancer tumors dramatically.

So I guess my diet is more healthy than I thought.

14. Germany has 'invented' a beer!
From the article:

"There are already a number of food supplements on the market containing hops,
and scientists in Germany have developed a beer that contains 10 times the amount
of xanthohumol as traditional brews. The drink is being marketed as a healthy beer,
but research is still under way to determine if it has any effect against cancer."

15. Ah! health food!
All of my favorite beverages appear to be good for you.

Coffee: Helps prevent heart attacks and lower blood pressure.

Wine: Heart health again.

Beer: helps prevent prostate cancer. Of course I don't have a prostate but it has to do SOMETHING good for women.

Damn I'm gonna live to be 100.

18. Junk science and junk journalism
Alcohol can speed the growth of cancer and is linked to GI cancers like throat, stomach, liver and colo-rectal cancers. Many people latch on to the parts of science they like and ignore the parts they don't. A headline proclaiming that beer can inhibit cancer growth is just plain wrong. And using the word "may" just shows that they know it is wrong but ran it anyway IMHO.
