City agency expected to file complaint against cheesesteak owner’s effort

PHILADELPHIA - City officials are expected to file a complaint Monday against an English-only ordering policy at Geno’s Steaks, one of Philadelphia’s best-known cheesesteak joints that has entered the national immigration debate.

Situated in a South Philadelphia immigrant neighborhood, Geno’s has posted small signs telling customers, “This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING ‘SPEAK ENGLISH.’”

“We’re alleging that the sign itself is enough of an unwelcoming message that it may violate the Fair Practices Act,” Rachel Lawton, acting executive director of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Personally I think that Philly City of Commerence should ban Geno's from any tourism promotions that they put out (you know - those little tour books you find in all the big city hotels).

Geno's just isn't another Philly Cheesesteak joint - Geno's & Pat's are a legendary institution within the city and as some have called - Ground Zero in the "Best Cheesesteak" wars.

1. One would imagine that Italian might be perfectly acceptable.
I guess not.

2. How about Philadelphian?
"Wit or wittout?" is a common cry heard in the cheesesteak quarter...

3. PUT THEM OUT OF BUSINESS!!
This is just OUTRAGEOUS!!

In Philadelphia, of ALL places -- Philadelphia -- the city that has WELCOMED millions of immigrants in the past.

I bet even Geno's ancestors, when they arrived in Philadelphia, DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH!!!

And I bet Geno's ancestors were welcomed -- EVEN THOUGH THEY DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH!!

For Geno to now turn around and DEMAND that patrons speak English is -- well, its beyond outrageous!!

The City of Philadelphia (the city of BROTHERLY LOVE) should put Geno's OUT OF BUSINESS!!!! NOW!!!

4.  Do you know how South Philadelphians can recognize
that you are not from South Philadelphia?

Because you're buyin' a Geno's cheese steak.

5. That's not fair
Geno's was the best place to get food after a heavy night of drinking on South Street or Delaware avenue.

Of course, fast foward 10 years and I don't ever go to South Street or Delaware avenue anymore so I'm guessing there is now no reason to go to Genos
