Bill Nelson is way ahead in the polls, has raised a ton of money and doesn't have it on a Democratic primary, yet he received another big boost Sunday with President Clinton coming to town for a fundraiser.
"I genuinely love Bill Nelson and his family," Clinton said, adding that their families have been friends for years. "This is personal for me and not just political. I know them."
The dinner at The Biltmore Hotel was expected to raise $500,000 for Nelson's re-election, with tickets priced at $1,000 per person. It comes as some polls have him more than 30 points ahead of the lead Republican challenger, U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris.
"He's got so much money already. Nelson's got over 11 to 12 million dollars for what seems to me to be a fairly safe seat," said Republican Sen. Mel Martinez. "Maybe the president wants to play golf down here."
