Will Jackgate Detroy the GOP?
This item was posted in my "Capital Games" column at www.thenation.com. If you've seen it already, please check out other postings below.

Is Jack Abramoff the gift that will keep on giving? And will he destroy the Republican Party?

It's not a coincidence that Tom DeLay resigned his leadership post--which he was forced to temporarily abdicate once he was indicted in Texas on charges of laundering campaign funds--days after Abramoff, the corrupt-Republican-lobbyist-turned-snitch, cut a deal with the feds that will require him to tell all. That certainly will entail sharing whatever he knows about his intimate relationship with DeLay and DeLay's closest political associates, as well as what he knows about other GOP lawmakers, staffers and high-powered Republican operatives (such as Ralph Reed and Grover Norquist). News reports have already said that up to twenty lawmakers and aides are already in the crosshairs of federal prosecutors thanks to Abramoff and Michael Scanlon, his former partner in sleaze, who also has been cooperating with the feds.

With nervous Republicans angling to toss DeLay overboard, the indicted ex-House majority leader had not much choice but to jump before being unceremoniously shoved aside. But GOPers still have reason for fear for at least two reasons:

1. The Abramoff inquiry is big.

2. As big as the Abramoff probe is, it could extend far beyond the corrupt dealings of Jack Abramoff and his pals on Capitol HIll and K Street.

2. I don't think so unfortunately. They will do a little at a time and test
the waters after each move to see if it is "enough". Ney was the next move. Unless a whole lot of names roll out of this investigation, they will wait patiently for the clouds to roll on by. They are already smacking their lips in glee because they think that the Dems really screwed up royally this week at the hearings. At least that is the spin I heard yesterday and today.

6. That is true.
I watched Fox for a few seconds yesterday and they had a panel on and all they were talking about was the Alito hearings and how the Democrats looked so bad. They made his wife cry, blah blah. :eyes: I am glad the hearings are over. Now they will have to start back talking about republican lobbyist Abramoff, the possible indictment of Karl Rove and the other scandals of the Bush administration...not that they were did.

8. Or maybe they'll do it
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 04:25 PM by FreedomAngel82
under the radar and nobody will report about it. Maybe that's what they're hoping for. That way nobody will know about it at the midterms so enough people will still vote republican.

12. There's one thing that gives me hope about this 'Jackgate' outcome
If the Cabal had the power we believe they'll need to drag things out and whitewash everything, then they could've easily quashed this whole investigation before any indictments were handed down. Yet, they didn't. That alone amazes me, so, I think I'll wait with guarded hope and see how this turns out. That Abramoff was under investigation for so long and worked on this deal for an entire year tells me there is a great deal of info. available to prosecutors.

3. I don't like the name "Jackgate"
I personally prefer "Abscam II" or the "K Street Mafia Affair"
The first Abscam took place in the '70's, when G-men posed as Arab oil tycoons; this Abscam is a takeoff of Abramoff's name)

5. That's why they are so desperate to get Alito on to the SC
Why do you think Lindsey Graham told Alito during the hearings, "and I hope you'll understand if any us come before a court and we can't remember Abramoff, you will tend to believe us."?

9. Yes
I thought that was very strange. He was talking about taking money from someone "bad" and not remembering etc. I found it quite strange. And that's directly after the wifey "cried." So that way the "media news" will be focusing on her and not what Graham was saying.

10. No for two different reasons
These bastards are VERY good at damage control. Even if they are not successful in that effort, there are alot of clean republicans as well. Maybe it will clean out the filth in the GOP. Then they will just be a party guided by the voices in their crazy little heads instead of the party guided by dollars.
