FEMA sets a "return our trailers" deadline for destroyed town
http://www.mysanantonio.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D8I554DG2.html

FEMA has told families that it wants its trailers back in March — an impossible deadline for many, considering those that can afford to rebuild are just now seeing building materials delivered to their lawns after inching up the waiting lists of overwhelmed contractors.

But in Sabine Pass, where the median income is about $17,000 and an estimated 70 percent had no homeowners' insurance, most aren't that lucky. Those who can't afford to rebuild may survive the storm season, but won't last much longer here afterward.

It makes Jackson so anxious that she tries relaxing each night with her favorite hobby, reading cookbooks — in a FEMA trailer that doesn't have a stove.

<snip>

But time is running out to build. Many don't have an answer when a FEMA agent shows up at their trailer each month and begins with the same two questions: What's your plan, and how's it coming along?

1. What doesn't make a lot of sense to me is why they're pushing this
issue (FEMA). Have they got a new use for these trailers? Has something happened that makes it necessary for FEMA to get them back before these people have a chance of finding shelter? In fact, in some cases (as in the case of the elderly or the handicapped or the extrememy poor), why do they need them back at all? We've given so much damn money to the wealthiest in our country, let these people have these trailers.

2. I heard there were already twelve tropical depressions in the Atlantic
Do you think Katrina is the last of this sort of thing. Where are the next homeless going to end up? There will be more on that you can bank.

3. So let's throw these people out into the elements just because there
is going to be more weather-related emergencies? Take the last bunch of homeless and throw them out so that we can prepare for the next round of people needing shelter?

Do you think that makes sense?

6. Amazing, isn't it? Sometimes it seems that people don't even follow
their ideas or opinions to their logical conclusion.

Put people who are already homeless out in the elements to prepare for people who may become homeless (and for the same reason no less).

8. The logical conclusion I have come to is we need to add more not take away
What was the ratio of funds between Iraq and Katrina (Homeland Security)? Why is the prepration for the next Katrina not even discussed? If by my post you came to the conclusion I wanted those people evicted from their trailers I apologize. I was only trying to make the point that this is only the beginning and not an end. What is more important Iraq or Homeland Security? By the way Congress distributes money one would come to the conclusion that Republicans believe Iraq is more important than the USA. That was my point, not eviction...

10. Not one bit of THIS post came through from your first one. In fact, what
came through originally was the attempt to justify throwing these people out of the trailers because of bad weather forecasts.

Why you throw in the part about Iraq and Homeland Security it beyond me. That wasn't part of the original discussion or even part of your original post.

7. There are not 12 tropical depressions in the Atlantic
The first one of the season just formed near Cuba. There may be tropical waves or other disturbances around the Atlantic but that is not unusual. A tropical depression is a closed system that has developed to a certain threshhold. Tropical waves and disturbances are not.

11. Typical behavior og the govt: pick on people with the least
ability to fight back. These people can't afford lawyers or a place to live. Easy pick'ns to get their collection statistics up for some clerk in FEMA.

13. Given the quick depreciation for trailers to begin with, just
let those people keep them. That's the least they could do with all the suffering the federal government inflicted on those folks down there.
