Taming American Power: The Global Response of U.S. Primacy
Stephen Walt

Stephen Walt outlines the different ways countries around the world, friends and foes alike, are currently resisting American power. He argues that if the U.S. wants to achieve its national security goals and preserve its primacy in the world, it will have to change its foreign policy. This would include, he says, a repudiation of the 2002 National Security Strategy (which allows for pre-emptive attacks) and a greater reliance on public diplomacy. The talk was hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. Includes Q&A.

Stephen Walt is a professor of international affairs at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. His other books include "Revolution and War" and "The Origins of Alliances."

Kill the Indian, Save the Man: The Genocidal Impact of American Indian Residential Schools
Ward Churchill

Ward Churchill talks about the history of government-created American Indian residential schools and argues that these schools had genocidal aims. Professor Churchill says that while the term "genocide" is widely understood to refer only to the mass killing of one or another ethinic group, the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide defines it in broader terms which apply to the policies of the U.S. government towards Native American children throughout much of the 20th Century. He describes the treatment that these children received and discusses the impact of these schools on Native American society today. The talk was hosted by City Lights Booksellers in San Francisco. Includes Q&A.

Ward Churchill is a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado - Boulder. He is the author of many books, including "A Little Matter of Genocide," "Since Predator Came," and "Fantasies of the Master Race."

D.C. Confidential: The Controversial Memoirs of Britain's Ambassador at the Time of 9/11 and the Iraq War
Christopher Meyer

Christopher Meyer, British ambassador to the U.S. from 1997 to 2003, recently caused an uproar in Britain after he published his behind-the-scenes memoirs, titled "D.C. Confidential." In the book, Ambassador Meyer shares his critical take on the relationship between Prime Minister Tony Blair and President George Bush leading up to the invasion of Iraq. During this hearing, Mr. Meyer answers questions from the British House of Common's Public Administration Select Committee in London about the clearance process he underwent before he published his book and the propriety of diplomats sharing information with the public that they learned on the job.

Christopher Meyer served as a diplomat in the British government for 36 years. His duties over the years included serving as British Ambassador to Germany, press secretary to Prime Minister John Major, press secretary to British Foreign Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe, and head of the political section of the British Embassy in Moscow. He is currently chairman of the British Press Complaints Commission.

6. Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
On Sunday, January 15 at 10:45 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
John Perkins

From 1971 to 1981 John Perkins worked as a chief economist for Chas. T. Main, a Massachusetts-based international strategic consulting firm. During this time Mr. Perkins said his job was to trick developing countries into taking enormous loans from the World Bank in order to construct or repair their domestic infrastructure. These loans were given with the understanding that these countries would then use those loans to pay U.S. corporations to complete these constructing and engineering projects. The author writes that when these developing countries were eventually unable to pay off these sizable debts, the United States, World Bank, or IMF would step in and control the country's security arrangements and budgetary structure.

John Perkins is the author of six books including "The World Is As You Dream It" and "Psychonavigation." He is the founder of the non-profit organization Dream Change, a grass roots movement intent on raising consciousness and creating sustainable lifestyles throughout the world.

2005 Texas Book Festival: "When the News Went Live: Dallas 1963" Panel

Bob Huffaker, Bill Mercer, George Phenix, and Wes Wise are the authors of "When the News Went Live: Dallas 1963" about the television coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The authors, all broadcast newsmen in Dallas at the time of the assassination, covered the unfolding events as they occurred at a pace too fast for print journalism. The men discuss the events immediately following the assassination as well as the broadcast of Lee Harvey Oswald's murder. "60 Minutes" correspondent Dan Rather moderates the panel. Mr. Rather wrote the foreword to "When the News Went Live."

Bob Huffaker is the editor of Texas Monthly and an investigative reporter. George Phenix is the co-founder and publisher of Texas Weekly. Wes Wise was the Mayor of Dallas from 1971 to 1976 and the Southwest Correspondent for Sports Illustrated. Bill Mercer is a CBS announcer for the Dallas Cowboys and Harry Caray's Chicago White Sox play-by-play partner.

The Thunder of Angels: The Montgomery Bus Boycott and the People Who Broke the Back of Jim Crow
Donnie Williams & Wayne Greenhaw

Donnie Williams and Wayne Greenhaw argue that both blacks and whites of the South played crucial roles in the modern civil rights movement. In "The Thunder of Angels" the co-authors detail the actions of the less familiar figures during this time, including Pullman porter E.D. Nixon and boycott organizer and minister Fred D. Gray. Mr. Williams and Mr. Greenhaw describe the personal sacrifices of some ordinary citizens including Clifford and Virginia Durr, a couple who supported the movement at a distance. This event was hosted by Dekalb County Public Library in Decatur, Georgia.

Donnie Williams inherited the bus Rosa Parks made famous during the Civil Rights movement and sold it to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. The Dream: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Speech that Inspired a Nation
Drew Hansen

From the Los Angeles Public Library, author Drew Hansen discusses his book “The Dream.” The first book about Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, it was published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the March on Washington. For inspiration he read the Bible, the Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence. In addition to exploring the composition, Mr. Hansen delves into the little-known history of Dr. King's speech. His analysis also includes examination of the speech as a political treatise, a work of poetry, and as an improvised sermon. The author reads an excerpt from his book and answers questions from the audience.

Drew Hansen, a Harvard graduate and a Rhodes Scholar studied theology at Oxford University. He received his law degree from Yale Law School, where he studied Civil Rights and the Constitution. Mr. Hansen practices law in Seattle, Washington.
