5. The poll was done before Zarqawi, one would assume
His numbers will go up a little- and then to the conservatives consternation (and isn't that a fun phrase), they will go back down.

9. Does that mean our troops
are going to get the reward money then?

Of course our troops got Zarqawi, just like our troops are doing all of the work in this *illegal* war! But the political windfall, if there is one, won't be going to our troops.

11. Halliburton gets the reward money.
No rationale necessary. Cheney says they get it, they get it.

10. Wow. Bush pushes for the Hate Amendment and gets no appreciable

change in his already-low standing. I'd like to live in a nation where his standing fell another 20 or so points, just on the basis that he's grandstanding with his hateful, discriminatory gesture -- a plastic bone tossed to the red Reich folks in his base. But at least it didn't HELP him.

I agree with others on DU that there may be a bounce, even if it's modest, for the news on Zarqawi, even though George W. Bush appears to have had exactly nothing to do with it, but even that bounce will be short-lived.

At this point in Duba's disastrous war in Iraq, one dead Al Qaeda operative is not going to boost Republicans' chances appreciably. The estate tax bombed today. The DOW has had a miserable week. Employment figures are up then down -- very volatile. Bernanke will raise interest rates in two weeks. Gas prices on average moderated slightly, but not enough to rev up elaborate vacation plans for what's left of the middle class.

Iraq -- and Afghanistan -- are angry piles of rubble strewn together by intermittent electricity and increasing distrust of U.S. occupation.

And people still perceive, as much now as ever, that Bush is a liar.

And properly so.
