Everyone please brace yourself now
Bush will get a slight bump in his approval ratings because of this Al-Qaieda guy. So please, when it happens don't freak out because in a month he'll be back to his normal 33-35% and by November 2006 election no one will remember who this guy was.

1. Yeah
What do you bet His Weeniness is unhappy that we got Zarqawi today? "You were supposed to get him in October!" <stomps foot>

3. Perhaps the guy will die again in October
I mean, it's not like it hasn't happened before :eyes:

(yes Skinner - I read your post, the guy is dead. Aren't I allowed a little bit of fun now and then?)

6. Of course he's dead!
Didn't you see his swollen face that looked like a very old an long-dead corpse? And you can't think that he could survive that heavy bomb blast and live... that swollen face must have helped keep him from being blown to pieces:)

Yeah, he's dead. But that is all I believe about this story at the moment. I'll have to wait and see what else comes out...

5. like the old SNL
recurring line - 'This just in - Franco is still dead!' Chevy Chase used that line on weekend update for months....Stephanie Miller, after every break this morning, would announce 'zarqawi is still dead.'

8. Many average Joes had no idea who he was until today.
Most people skip over the Iraq news these days- more people than we realize here at DU or in the beltway.

Yes- the media will assign Bush higher poll #s as a result of this.

9. That is not true
Zarqawi like Bin Laden actually was number 1 on google, yahoo, and Lycos in 2004 after the beheadings started like Bin Laden was after 911 and he has been talked about endlessly in the media for three years. If an American doesn't know who Zarqawi is they are probably too dumb to count on voting.

10. Meaningless. The average Joe does not read much internet news.
Edited on Thu Jun-08-06 01:12 PM by Dr Fate
They read the sports section and watch the local news. The people i talk to at the bus stop, etc tend to be weary and are ignoring most Iraq news.

Fewer people than you think knew much about him until today.

Skip the computer and get on a bus or in a grocery line and talk to non- political junky type people- if you had done this a month ago and asked these people who he was, most people would have given you an inaccurate description or would not even know who he was.

"too dumb to count on voting"- Not so- these are the "swing-voters" we hear so much about. They are swing-voters b/c they do not pay much attention to details until a few weeks before they vote.

14. All of us, including me tend to forget that most folks dont read DU.
And they dont read much news at all on the internet.

More people than some realize are skipping national & international news all together-in any format- they are weary of hearing about all the "bad stuff going on."

Of course, it will be hard to ignore Zar-who-ee now- but a new boogey man will come along as the fighting continues and we all forget about him.

15. Zarqawi has been named in 4 prime time speechs to the nation
including 2 State of the Union addresses.

Only the totally uninformed don't know who he is and those people don't vote.

16. You mean the lowest rated speeches of recent memory?
Edited on Thu Jun-08-06 01:42 PM by Dr Fate
Again, your average joe & jane was busy watching "reality TV" or sports or E-TV during those low-rated speeches you mention.

If you think uninformed people dont vote, then you need to do some ground research on just who "swing-voters" are. Dont confuse this class of "swing-voters" with those swing-voters who are informed moderates or centrists.

Yes- many people who are that uninformed really do vote- No offense- but the fact that you dont seem to know this suggests that you have not done much ground work talking to regular folks.

Hey- I'm not saying the media wont give Bush a big bounce over this- I'm just demonstrating that this too will pass- folks are going out of their way to hide from the news today.

A new boogey man will pop up in a few weeks- and Joe Six pack wont know too much about him either.

13. I hope he gets a big bump
Because that will mean that a lot of people fall for his bullshit and the implications in this story that somehow the Iraq war will go significantly better after today.

We all know what's gonna happen in Iraq after today.....the same thing that has happened in the last 3 years....worsening violence.

Then maybe some who bought the latest glass of koolaid will feel foolish enough to stop drinking it.

17. Bush's ratings are like an amazing crazy rollercoaster that
gave us all the great thrills in the beginning and gets kinda lame and almost dangerous like it'll crash into the group in a not so thrilling way
