...I've seen it happen. I watched a friend of mine get hit in the head with a thrown full beer can by a spoiled frat boy at a peace rally. They were chanting "Crack Hippie skulls!" although when it was shown on the news that night, all they chanted was "USA!"

It sucks. I have had quite a lot of friends and family in the service, and I have nothing but support for anyone who can do the job, because it isn't easy. At the same time, I have nothing but contempt for Bush, Coulter, Cheney, and the rest of the spoiled rich bastards sending them off to die.

in November 2002 in a bar by a 20 something yahoo. He was ranting on about dumbass liberals and how we should go to war in Iraq. I offered a differing opinion. He told me:

"You ought to join the Army and go to Iraq to prove your love of our country."

I showed him my military retiree ID Card, told him I served 24 years in uniform and did a tour in a combat zone. I then asked him where he had served. He said he hadn't served in the military "yet." He then left my bar never to be seen again. One of my all time favorite experiences with one of them. After the short disruption me and my fellow old farts went back to ogling the scantily clad young lady behind the bar and telling lies about our sexual conquests. Ah, the good life. I am very sincere when I say about "conservatives" - bring em on.

spontaneously tell the stories of their firefights and things like that?

I've had a couple of students who served in Iraq, and met some WW II vets, and all of them seemed pretty reluctant to go into details beyond at most saying they did have to fight and possibly kill someone.

I hate to play the vet card but I thought I was justified in bringing the subject up since I was being told to join the Army by a numbnuts yahoo. I found that a little bit nutty. My father in law landed at Omaha Beach on DDay and I interviewed him about his experiences before he died and it was like pulling teeth but I wanted his story to be saved for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. And my experiences pale in comparison to his.

I believe my time in uniform was just a job, no more or less important than the jobs done by every other American.

Your question wasn't considered criticism but your observation is right on the money. Guys who actually earned and were awarded the congressional medal of honor don't have to brag that they have one. I have incredible pity for chickenhawks who wear military gear and wave the flag and "support" our troops and yet have never served themselves. I do have an I love me Wall in my office but to me my baubles are on display to ensure that my time in uniform is never forgotten by me and it is also a shrine to My Flag which was presented to me when I retired. I had a very rewarding career and now I have fond memories. As I told a chickenhawk not too long ago, when I wave the flag it means something.
