Someone here has to say it: ANN COULTER IS NOT REAL.
Come on, people. She's an incredibly saavy businesswoman who has come to the conclusion that voicing the opinions of the most psychotic 15% of America will result in lots of publicity, book sales and money. It freaking works.

There was a time about three years ago that Coulter genuinely angered me. I now understand that she's not worth my attention because SHE'S NOT REAL.

I think she's good friends with Bill Maher because he's in on the big joke. She panders to insane right-wingers because they are zombies who do what they're told...so long as someone feeds them their ration of hatred. She spews filth and they buy her books.

It's a very simple equation, one that DU should have solved long ago.

3. She's a) Putting on a Show or b) hasAttention-Seeking Personality Disorder

She will say or do most anything to get attention. For a long time I have been leaning towards option b - Attention-Seeking Personality Disorder. But no doubt it could be a combination of the two, given that she is paid so well for her disease.

11. Which is exactly why the BEST thing would be to ignore her.
Like any troll -- she feeds off the attention, negative or otherwise.

She's not a compassionate, creative, or interesting person -- there's no way she's going to get much in the way of positive attention. So she goes for the other.

I have never read a thing that creature has written, I have never seen that one on TV. I've only seen an occasional picture and read an occasional thread -- not unlike this one.

There is no neocon I can bear to watch or listen to, even if they are about to get beat up by Mike Malloy or Randi.

I've traded in my TV for high speed internet.

Her dad was a union busting lawyer right wing psychopath as well and she was one of the lawyers involved in the whole whitewater mess trying to destroy Clinton. So she's not just some average chick off the street who found a way to scam people out of money and pull a good practical joke. She really is a genuine psychopath. I think she honestly believes it and lives it.

8. She's a GOP useful tool, not a performer
Never forget her role in fomenting the screeching over the Clinton business. She was in the thick of that.

She's a wonderful tool for them, too, because they can use her, and discard her. It's not as though she dines at the White House. They can claim that she holds her own views, they aren't the views of the GOP, blah, blah, blah.

She's easily discredited by them, if they need to so do. The perfect operative.

9. THANK YOU.
I cannot believe all of the discussions about this moron on DU today. A cable channel puts her on, and people flock to the television to get pissed off. Then they flock to the cable channel's web site to participate in a poll.

I've never believed that she (or any of the other hate mongers) is real.

IT SELLS ADVERTISING, GUYS. For the media, that is always the bottom line.

20. I hope you're right, but it is dangerous to ignore a key propagandist
for the other side.

She is a few steps ahead of the rest of the GOP. Her criticisms of the press in the late 90s look a lot like the Bush policies of this decade.

You are making the same mistake the Democrats are--you think if you play nice the other side will too.

I would rather have a substantive debate too, but these guys would rather attack people personally, shut them out of the debate, and then rig the votes.

Unless we start treating these people according to how they act, we will continue to lose.

14. Ann's style of rhetoric has become acceptable for GOP pols
That is one of the things that has freaked me out about the Bush years. Most republicans used to leave the most extreme rhetoric to talk radio and shills like Ann, but now it is becoming the norm in Congress.

The next gap to close is between violent words and actual violent actions against their domestic enemies.

23. Whatever her motivations are, she is definitely to journalism
what professional wrestlers are to sports. She will say almost anything to get attention. Her real motivation is to get attention and make money. I think Limbaugh and Hannity could also be included in that group. We need to do the same thing with her that the repubs have done with Micheal More. Start using the term "Ann Coulter Republicans".

But, based on the number of fanatics I have met who worship her, I find it easy to believe she is real.

It is possible that she is always in character, like Stephen Colbert, but I think that is wishful thinking.

Plus, I would think she would want to be funnier...

38. You Are Wrong
If she wasn't real, we wouldn't be talking about her. Don't worry... she is not benefiting from our posting of her. Sure she's a fake... the whole GOP is FAKE! That's their job... but that doesn't mean we should ignore these people. You can't let this go on... to the common person, it is seen as a weakness, and as an affirmation that she might have a point and that we on the left, can't counter her.

It is this mentality that has hurt the left for the last 30 years. People like Dean, and many other good liberals, who speak out and confront these monsters, are the ones that get the respect, and hopefully leadership roles in the Democratic Party. Taking the higher ground is getting... well.... OLD!

40. I agree she is not real, here's why:
I have spoken to her on the phone several times when I was doing tech support. She was what I would call a demanding customer, but in no way irrational. Even when I had to tell her stuff she did not like to hear, she could deal with the reality of the situation. In my tech support career I have spoken to MUCH more unreasonable people than her.

This was a few years ago (pre 9/11) and I knew who she was at the time, but I still managed to be civil to her. I have hesitated posting the fact that I had actually spoken to her, as I consider her altogether reprehensible and I did not want to appear to be defending her in any way.

Now I realize that just dealing with someone over the phone for a specific technical problem gives me very little insight into her political philosophy (such as it is) but it has long been my feeling that she is a pandering charlatan. Nothing in my dealings with her has ever led me to doubt that is anything other than all about business/publicity.

Let me restate: Ann Coulter is a pandering political charlatan.

Which in a way is even more reprehensible than if they were "real". They are willing to sell out the entire public discourse for a few bucks.

They suck.

43. No offense but... Duh.
Lots of people have managed to make a very good living simply by saying or doing the outrageous. Howard Stern comes to mind.

When you say the most outrageous things you can think of to garner attention people listen. Those who love you listen, of course, but those who DESPISE you tend to listen just as closely and if your trying to sell a book, like Coulter is, then that is a win/ win.

The posts on DU proved this beyond a shadow of a doubt over the last couple of days (years!).
