Hillary Lashes Out at Ann Coulter
By DEVLIN BARRETT , 06.07.2006, 02:08 PM

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton lashed out at Ann Coulter for a "vicious, mean-spirited attack" on a group of outspoken 9/11 widows, whom the right-wing television pundit described as "self-obsessed" and enjoying their husbands' deaths.

Coulter writes in a new book, "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," that a group of New Jersey widows whose husbands perished in the World Trade Center act "as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them." She also wrote, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much."

Clinton, who has felt Coulter's wrath over the years, responded angrily on Wednesday.
"Perhaps her book should have been called 'Heartless,'" the senator said. "I know a lot of the widows and family members who lost loved ones on 9/11. They never wanted to be a member of a group that is defined by the tragedy of what happened."

The New York Democrat and former first lady said she found it "unimaginable that anyone in the public eye could launch a vicious, mean-spirited attack on people whom I've known over the last four and a half years to be concerned deeply about the safety and security of our country."

Sorry for another thread on Ann Coulter.

1. No, this is an important one!
Say what you will about Hillary Clinton, it was very important for her to defend the widows from 9/11 since so many of them are from the state that she represents.

9. The particular 9/11 widows Coulter was attacking are nicknamed "The Jersey
Girls" because they live in NJ and not NY.

14. Their husbands worked and died in NYC, though
When I worked for PA state government, we had many people working in Philadelphia who lived over the line in Jersey. We didn't dismiss their concerns because they weren't registered to vote in the state. That was a main difference between Republican & Democratic reps/staffers W/ the R's, they'd check to see not only if the caller lived in their district, but if they were registered Rs.

21. "Lashes Out"?
How about: "Hillary Clinton Expresses Disgust at Vile Comments Made by Ann Coulter"?

or even more simply: "Clinton Responds to Ann Coulter's Slander of 9/11 Widows"?

The term "lashes out" has a negative connotation, and is more aptly applied to Ann Coulter's ravings on The Today Show.

of course Mannie Annie (sorry, no offense to transgendered intended) was attacking the "Jersey Girls", but widows of 911 are going to be both New Yawkers and Jerseyites.

But, so brave of her to "speak out" over a book, just like she was running for re-election.

oh, she is running for re-election? No Wonder!

34. I Suspect That The Old Saying
any publicity is good publicity is the case here

the more attention it is given, the more people (usually RW'ers) flock to it

especially now that Hillary (the RW's demon/love object) has fired back

She probably is personally attacking Coulter because she hates her, but I don't believe that she is defending any 9/11 wives unless it is politically expedient for her.

Being from Arkansas and knowing a little about Hillary I feel confident in saying these things.

I really do believe she feels that way about Coulter. Hillary, of all people, at least have the right to criticize Coulter since the witch has wrote tons of books about her family. After reading those quotes, anyone (including Hillary) would want to give them a piece of their mind.

Lets pick up the ball and run with it Hillary.

30. No, im done ingnoring Coulter and her ilk..
I think we all thought if we ingore her and not give her the time of day she and her kind will go away. The Democracts thought that by acting like the Coulters, Savages and those kind did not exist and would go away. Well they have not and wont. I think its time for the democrats to start fighting back. Sure give them more ink. Its what they want. But the old saying goes be careful what you wish for due to when the big brians on the left get pissed and challenge, you see more and more of them go back to the dark hole they came from. I hope Hillary's shot is the first of many at those scumbags who make a living on the seperation of the country. Fine i hope there are a million posts about Ann Coulter show her as the heartless skank she is and send a message to the Milkins, Savages, Lucciane Goldbergs, and such that we are done taking your crap..Have a taste!

33. At this point, who cares?
You know, sometimes you just have to take your shots. The only people buying this sad little tome are the little Freepers who'd have gone out and bought it anyway. Democrats MUST speak out and resist the temptation to remain silent when they get a hatchet job from one of these diseased brains. There is no higher ground in politics so it doesn't do a whole lot of good to try to take one.

One of the things I've always been dubious of with taking the "if you ignore them, they will go away" stance with the neocon punditry is that this only works if YOU are the one they're trying to talk to. They aren't talking to us. No neocon pundit is talking to any Democrat or liberal... anywhere. They're talking to other neocons... they're the club newsletters. And their audience is listening with anticipation to every next salvo of drivel these hacks churn out. These people should be challenged on each and every remark they make until they get tired of answering for every word said or penned... only THEN will they have any cause to go away.

36. Yeah, Like Hillary Needs Any Tutelage About Fighting Back
she will fight back if it passes her focus groups

and believe me, she knows how to do it, and when she does, she wins!

So, the trick is get public opinion to agree with our side more and she will stand up for us.

I'm sorry, I used to like Hillary, then I saw how she is a bigger "operator" than her husband, she just lacks the charisma that Bill has.

43. Doesn't matter if you're a Hillary fan or not...
It's the principle. Seriously, how often does a person have to be kicked in the shins by someone like Coulter before a response is permitted? I mean, really, one of the big issues I've had about the Democratic party is that they let their opponents define them, and what better way to show that they've done it other than to allow ourselves to imagine galvanizing an opposing force through opposition to their statements and tactics? Once this happens, you've already lost the game. You're hosed if you do and hosed if you don't.

You have to stand for something. We do. But you have to be willing to risk unpopularity with some to galvanize support with others. That's all part of taking a stand, picking a side, call it what you want. This is one of the reasons why Democrats lose elections. They let the neocons define them. They let them take charge of the conversation. They let them play aggressive games and rarely fight back when they do. And when it's all said and done, the only thing that's ever offered as a mea culpa is a plaintive, "we didn't stoop to their level."

I don't care if you're a Hillary fan or not. Me, I could care either way about her. She's a politician as are all the others, and YES, of course they'll go where it'll take them the farthest. But even a snake slithers into the light of day sometimes, and if you were going to take a stand, lambasting someone who has the unmitigated gall to question the aggrievement of 9/11 widows is certainly an ironclad, no-gray-hair one to take.

Even a jaded politician loses patience when some talking head with an ugly mind and a fat mouth (who can't be bothered to seek office herself) decides that the rules of propriety no longer apply in any way and goes where Coulter took it. Ann Coulter should be castigated publically by anyone who can find a microphone to shout into. Outside of Hillary, the silence is deafening.
