Hey Senator Byrd Fanatics...
Can you explain this one?

Two Democrats voted for the amendment: Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Robert Byrd of West Virginia.

Go ahead, then!

2. I never expect those 2 to vote my way - especially Nelson!
That way lies disappointment and frustration.

4. This is how I commented on another thread about Byrd.................
.....Has it occurred to anyone that just maybe the people of his state truly want this. Just because DU doesn't want such an amendment is no sign the rest of the country agrees. I truly don't know what the people of WV think/believe politically but there's a possibility most agree with and even asked him to vote yes.

Personally I think the whole stupid thing should be dropped in favor of health care for all, in favor of bringing our Military home, in favor of repealing the tax cut for the richest of the rich, and on and on I could go.

Can someone from WV tell us how the majority would vote on this??

5. The Constitution is for ALL states..it is a FEDERAL document
West Virginia can pass whatever law it pleases if the courts agree.

This is about the CONSTITUTION.

9. Well in Blue Oregon
Every county save one voted for a same-sex only marriage amendment. All 11 states that had one on the ballot in 2004 voted against gay marriage, even states that voted for Kerry. I think that sort of speaks to where people are at on the issue in most of the country. I would think gay couples might not want this to go to the states because they'd lose and it would be a big step backwards for even getting civil unions and basic rights. I still think turning away civil unions is about as stupid as a starving person turning away bologna because equality means everyone should get to eat steak.

7. Nothing new
Byrd has never been a liberal. He is a social conservative. He represents a socially conservative state. He is 87 years of age and has different set of values than many younger democrats. He is still a hero in how he has taken on Bush on the war and other matters, but this doesn't surprise me nor did his support for Alito.
