Iraq frees first of 2,500 prisoners
2.01PM, Wed Jun 7 2006

The first of 2,500 prisoners set to be released from some of Iraq's most notorious prisons have walked free.

At least 594 prisoners have already been freed, some kissing the ground as they went.

The move was announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in a bid to unite warring Sunnis and Shi'ites.

There has been anger in the Sunni minority over allegations of random detentions and mistreatment of prisoners.

The remainder of the 2,500 detainees set for release will be freed after their cases are reviewed, al-Maliki said.
