I'm going to write an essay and post it later today or early this evening because in many ways, this was a profoundly validating experience for me. I will want to set the scene and give some paraphrased 'quotes' but what was important was that he was exactly as you see him on television...but better. Bright, charismatic, charming, dryly witty, but most of all, clearly competent in his thought style and his breadth of knowledge of the Middle East, Africa, and the controlling bureaucracy of the US was just breathtaking and encyclopedic. I might add that he knows that it is and that he lets you know that it is, but there's nothing offensive about someone who knows what he's talking about speaking his mind. Many of his comments, even his off-handed ones, were recycled, but who can blame him? He's asked the same ten questions fifty times a day - of that I'm certain.
Just as a teaser, someone at the table - and I was fortunate enough to sit at a table for seven (!) with him - said that you-know-who was 'stupid' - and Mr. Wilson said, "No, he's actually rather bright - in a feral way." Love that word...nice to know that there's someone with an intellect and a vocabulary to go along with it.
More later...
