A "Traditional Marriage"...
One where bride and groom were betrothed to each other at about age 8 for the boy and 5 for the girl, when they had finally contracted and survived all of the often fatal diseases of childhood, where the father of the bride is expected to provide a substantial dowery, where neither of them know each other until they are married a month after her first period at age 11 (he's 14), where the new wife has her first baby 9 months later, and another one every two years until menopause or her death. Where the whole clan lives under one roof, having no privacy from each other even during intimate moments.

That is "Traditional Marriage". What the neo-cons are defending now is simply a modern perversion of the traditional Marriage and Family.

7. I cannot believe what I just saw.
"Does love motivate the guy who sleeps with his girlfriend when it will scar her emotionally and damage her relationship with God?"

Uh, sex is 'emotionally scarring' folks, uh huh, um, yep, erm, errrrrrr, is it unnatural or something? Shit me dead.

13. It beggars words, what these freaks "believe"
The essential meanness of so much of it is what makes them dangerous.

Dobson wants to beat children until they "cry real tears." Arranged marriages. Silent suffering. Magic crackers and bloody grape juice.

If this was done absent the name of "Jesus" none of it would be legal. Most of it would be felonious. All of it would be deemed a public nuisance.

18. There was the saddest story about a woman on that blog...
She was going to be a doctor, she'd been accepted to veterinary school (which is actually MUCH harder to get into than even medical school) but "the Lord laid it upon my husband’s heart that He wanted us to stay" with his church.

I just want to scream "GOD IS EVERYWHERE!" whenever I see things like this. The church moves with you, it's where you are, wherever two or three are gathered in His Name. I mean there's God opening these great shiny doors for you, and you run away and crawl out the back window with your husband because your husband is afraid.

Maybe it's not that way at all, maybe you didn't want to go to veterinary school because it's very hard work requiring great sacrifice, and maybe you really would be better as a stay at home mom which is a very fine and noble thing (I've been a stay at home dad) but don't go making excuses for your decision, and certainly don't go saying it's been some kind of Obedience to the Lord unless He comes down from Heaven Himself and tells you so right to your face.

:yoiks: (Yoiks, I sound just like my mom!)

6. Thank you for the history lesson.
You are completely correct. Marriage, until last century, was about property and family alliances.
