For those shy about contacting reps on this week's important issues
Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 09:17 PM by havocmom
People For The American Way page for easy emails on several important issues.

You fill in your address, the site will figure your reps and get email ready. You can go with their pre-formatted note, edit/add to it, or scrap it all together and write your own message. If you want, the site will generate a copy of your email and send it to you along with confirmation that the email went to your reps. It is easy and painless.

Not as much fun as calling offices ;) but for the novices or the shy, it takes the pain out of being heard.

I sent off emails on several issues today. You can too, even if you have never done it before! Come on, it'll make you feel better. Nothing beats stress, fear, or depression like a little direct action!

Here's what I sent to my reps on the repeal of the estate tax. The part that was already on the site form that I kept in my message is italicized so you can see how easy it is to modify the message or completely write your own.

All the PR the 17 richest families in America can buy will not change the fact that I KNOW this tax only affects one half of one percent of the estates in America. Calling it a death tax to scare people is a lie. Truth is to repeal the Estate Tax is to IMPOSE a BIRTH Tax on every single citizen of this nation, due to the impact on the deficit!

Stop pandering to rich people and do the right thing for ALL Americans. Do not impose a BIRTH TAX on all, including the poorest and most at risk members of our society just so rich people can concentrate more wealth at the top

Scions of the ultra wealthy have more opportunities to "pull themselves up by their boot straps" than do the kids of the poor and working class. If the heirs of the top can't manage to make it from the rather nice position they are starting from, no amount of inheritance will help them!

Permanently repealing or gutting the Estate Tax is wrong. The American people have needs that must be met, and Sen. Kyl’s bill permanently repealing the tax would cost a trillion dollars in its first ten years, and only benefit a relative handful of America’s wealthiest families. Compromise bills that would also gut the Estate Tax are equally unacceptable. We can’t afford this wrongheaded tax cut.

It’s common sense. Passing another trillion dollars in crippling debt onto future generations will drain the government’s capacity to effectively provide for Americans in areas like health care and education and burden tax payers and consumers with significant additional costs.

Please vote NO on the repeal or gutting of the Estate Tax.

After you have sent a few of these out, you'll be an old pro offical rabble rouser! You may be up to making direct phone calls in no time! You may be so pleased with your original comments you will be inspired to write some letters to the editor of your local newspapers!

If you are a novice at all this but concerned about the direction our policy makers are taking America, give it a try. We need you on the team as activists! It feels GOOD. It is part of your heritage as an American! It's empowering and it pisses off Dick Cheney!
:woohoo:

3. You're right and you're welcome!
We were ALL new at this stuff at one point. There are lots of good people who are new at it right now. Make it easy for them to get the hang of it.

We all hear so many people voice fear and anxiety over all the horrible things going on. Do them a favor and help them experience how much better is it to DO SOMETHING about it!

Think of it as sharing a goodie with new friends, whatever your favorite goodie might be ;)

2. Good for you!
And..good for all of us if we keep the pressure on. We need to constantly remind our elected officials that we're paying attention and we're not happy. If we don't let them know how we feel...they'll assume that we don't care about these issues...and God knows, there's plenty of them for us to raise our collective voices about!

5. I'm getting really tired of the "woe is us" mentality.
It's like the old saying "everybody talks about the weather but no one does anything about it". Well...we need to stop talking (to ourselves) about what an incompetent ass is living in the white house..and start bitching where it will do some good!

11. Spot on, bluethruandthru!
Preaching to the choir here is good to hone our presentation, but we gotta take it to main street to make a difference. Convince a few on the fence every chance we get. Get us a posse and let the Hill know...

We The People are mad as hell, and we're not gonna put up with reps who don't honor America. WE ARE AMERICA!

13. The journal is great because you can just refer people to it,
and they can almost immediately find your posting.

Trying to use DU search is unwieldy at best.

H. Res. 626:
congratulating Albert Pujols on being named the Most Valuable Player for the National League for the 2005 Major League Baseball season

12. Yep, write 'em, Remind 'em who they work for.
Let them know if they don't meet your standards, they will not be retained ;)

But remember: You have to let them know what your standards are. You have to be heard and let them know you are watching, as Goldie Hawn said in that movie..."like a hawk".

17. Boston and Mass had nothing going - Dem convention was last week-end and
as usual no one backed down so as to form a coalition and have an uncontested primary, and minor candidates met the Mass Dem rule that you must get 15% of the convention to get on the primary ballot.

So I watched the CA-50 race and noted that with 40,000 votes all via absentee the media said 11% of the vote was counted, while the final total was under 100,000 total votes.

Seems the GOP steal an election through illegal absentee ballots was not even needed as the GOPer won by a 1000 more than the 3000 lead that he came out of the absentee count with.

But the GOP campaign was the usual GOP smears - and indeed lies that are never checked by the media.

Have I mentioned how much I love our media? - Oh yeah, I should mention my op-ed on the estate tax appears to be a trashed piece by the Boston Globe, despite my bonifieds in the areas of tax and math and dealing with the extremely rich.

18. Run that part about your piece on the Estate Tax by me again
(maybe in a PM?) as I am not hitting on all cylinders this morning and not quite getting what you're saying.

Oh, and did you hear-------> Flat-top hair cuts are in up here in Montana! :D
Tester to go up against Burns. Hope the DLC sees the benefit of returning to our Populist Roots! I KNOW Dr. Dean gets it.

Repeal of Estate Tax prevented.

:woohoo:
Thanks for keeping this kicked so more would see how easy it is to let their reps hear from them on issues like this!

Every little bit helps. :hi:
