To all DU'ers who have changed your avatars to the rainbow flag
Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 09:22 PM by cboy4
and pink triangles, I just want to say thank you so much.

And thank you to Du'ers who haven't changed your avatars but have written posts in opposition of the gay marriage amendment proposal.

You have certainly caught my attention as well as other gay DU'ers.

I just can't express how much your support means to us.

Thank you.

:loveya: :pals: :grouphug:

edit: to add pink triangles. How could I have left that out? DOUGH!

69. What you said!
I always try to refer to that stupid waste of Senatorial blather as the "Marriage DISCRIMINATION AMENDMENT." It's important to glue the word "discrimination" onto this travesty, to keep the truth up front about it. It should never be referred to without adding the word "discrimination," since that's what it's all about.

Guess these "Buy-bull" specialists forgot the passage that read "judge not, lest ye be judged." Matthew 7:1

..and remember that they do not apply only to Communists, Socialists, Trade Unionists and Jews.

"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."

38. No it would not
The word "marriage" comes with many years of judicial precedent and common law. In some states, those precedents and common law stretch back almost 300 years, well in to their days as a British colony. That body of jurisprudence does not apply to "civil union", because "civil union" is a different legal concept than "marriage."

If certain people object to our using the word "marriage," they should be the ones to create a new institution and give up the rights, protections, responsibilities and privileges that centuries of court rulings have given marriage.

30. I can only speak for myself,
but I believe I owe gays an apology for not working hard enough to end the discrimination you're forced to endure.

That discrimination affects me personally a hell of a lot more than the thought that you might actually be free to enjoy the same rights the rest of us do.

Me and Ms. D will celebrate our twentieth anniversary in September, and our marriage has never been threatened by gays. In fact, without my friend who is gay, I'd never have been introduced to the woman with whom I've shared my life for more than twenty-five years, the mother of our eighteen year old son...he just graduated from high school!

He's a great person, tolerant, and a liberal for life.

Kids like this are the future; the old bigots will die out, bitter and angry to the end. Our kids will live on in a more tolerant world. Yes, I really believe that.

We'll all be free, and when we are, that will be one fine day.

Steve

31. can i tell you something funny??
during the 2004 election cycle..my husband and i housed in fla the kerry field rep for our area of fla..i was an elected dem delegate...

well this young man became like a son to us..( i love him like a son..for sure)

well i helped him open the kerry headquarters in our area..well the campaign stuff came in from washington..and dopey me..i npacked the rainbow kerry stuff..well i thought it was so pretty..i put the kerry stickers on my husbands suv ..and i put the pretty rainbow ones on his car..all over the car...

well i had no idea it meant gay pride..and no one told me..or my husband...

so my husband drove around with them on for a couple months...

and a couple times my husband said he was approached in parking lots..and he said it was weird..still totally unaware..what all the stickers on his car symbolized...

well the day after the election ..when we were all feeling down..and fighting off our hangovers from election night...

our new..adopted son ( well he is like he is adopted now)...he was sitting on the couch with my husband..they were both exhausted...and this young man started laughing his ass off..and he told my husband he had been driving around for months with the gay pride stickers on his car..and pins on his shirts...

my husband was flabbergasted..and he started laughing as well and said..now he realized why other men were looking at him at red lights and smiling so much at him..!!!

then my husband ran down to the parking lot and pulled the stickers off!!

i laughed till my ribs hurt..i asked ..why did no one ever tell us this ..of all the workers at the headquarters..i was told they all thought it was cute and they didn't want to embarrass us!!

lol!!!!

heck i didn't know what the rainbow meant!!

and to be honest i was on here a quite a while and didn't know what the pink avatar meant..it was Andy who told me what it meant!!..i was clueless!!

oh well..

now i know...

41. I'll never forget how our GLBT brothers and sisters came through
in the last election. We used our rainbow Kerry/Edwards banner to scare the abortion-mobile that wouldn't leave our lot. When nothing else would work, that did. I guess they were afraid of catching gay cooties or something.

But anyway, youse guys were there for us. It's the very least we can do to be there for you.

I'm hoping that the latest DOMA bullshit is being seen through at last as the pathetic pandering it is. There would seem to be signs that this is true. With all the things wrong in this world, and all the things that need fixing, the GOP pick THIS to go after. Morans.

51. I support equal rights for LGBT people!
The man in my user picture is one of my favorite gay cultural icons - Brian Epstein, who was manager of the Beatles. The world would be far poorer today if not for his discovery and tireless promotion of the Beatles.

66. As for me, spending time as a DU "FAUXmosexual" is only symbolic.
When I changed my avatar, I also promised to
devote time to making a REAL difference, somehow, some way.

It might not be a BIG difference, or an important one,
but it certainly WILL be more than just a new avatar
on the world's best discussion site.

Until I have actually satisfied MYSELF that I have
created some REAL effect in support of all that is good and true,
my pink triangle will be right there.

Considering how SLOWLY my brain works, I suspect it may be there
for quite some time.

I'm jealous. I'll be in that cess pool Houston. haha. But to see President Gore, so it's not all bad!

77. Bu**sh** is, for once, a uniter, and a source of inspiration.
He has united many of us on DU in our opposition to his narrow-minded, hateful attack on the principle of equal human rights for all. And he has inspired us to be even more vocal in that opposition.

I could tell myself--as many people do--that it really doesn't make any difference to me whether gays can marry or not. It doesn't affect me in any direct way, nor any members of my immediate family. I could even say it doesn't affect anyone I know, but I don't, strictly speaking, know if my friends and coworkers are gay or not. There's never been any reason for me to ask, nor for them to say. So I could curl up in my shell and let the whole travesty play out without me. True, I get pretty belligerent when someone steps on my rights, but I've never jumped into any Quixotic crusades for someone else's. Well, maybe it's about time I did. Maybe I'm mad about this issue because I'm just so mad about everything else that Bu**sh** has done wrong, that it's spilling over. But I don't think that's it. Maybe I'm mad because the notion of a Constitutional Amendment against gay marriages shows such an appaling ignorance of the purpose and intent of the Constitution and its Amendments. (rant: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph... ) That would certainly appeal to the scholarly fussbudget in me. But I don't think that's it either. I think what it really comes down to is I don't care for bullying, and I don't care for bullies. Of course it's been obvious all along that Bu**sh** is a twisted little freak who gets his kicks out of inflicting pain on others. But there's something about this campaign against gay marriage that's just so calculating in its abuse that it turns my stomach. Bu**sh** is pushing this even though he knows he is inflicting pain with no accomplishment resulting. It is only that his base supporters (double-entendre alert) believe--or purport to believe, which may not be the same thing at all--that their lives are diminshed by other people being treated as equally deserving of love, happiness, and respect as themselves.

Love, liberty, and happiness are not zero-sum contests. My happiness is not sacrificed if someone else gains in happiness. My liberties are not eroded when liberties are extended to others. And knowing that two people have found love with each other does not in any way mean that there is less love left over for others, myself included. On the contrary, love, liberty, and happiness seem to increase more, the more of them there are. If citizens of a democracy are thrilled to see other societies taking up democracy, inspired by example, shouldn't members of the institution of marriage be thrilled to see others taking up that institution, likewise inspired by example? The fact that others want that institution so badly should only reinforce our conviction of the value of the institution--indeed, even elevate its value. Marriage doesn't need protection from that. It is discrimination that devalues; equality only elevates. The next time you hear someone defending the "sanctity" of marriage, remind them that that sanctity is precisely what gays want to share in. They do, indeed, want to be like us after all.

“The legitimate powers of government extend only to such acts as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say that there are twenty gods, or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”
--Thomas Jefferson {applies to just about anything else my neighbor believes as well, including in his/her love life}

79. This is one issue that really gets me riled up....
How can we dare to legislate love and family?

No matter how hard I try, I can't understand the argument that gay marriage somehow threatens hetero marriage. Marriage is neither gay nor straight; it's a union of 2 consenting committed adults who intend to spend their lives together.

I hope we can overcome the overwhelming ignorance that drives this kind of legislation -- if not now, at least I know my children are being raised to make this country a more tolerant and loving place.

...but I haven't jumped on the avatar bandwagon, because I don't want to dignify what is obviously a cynical ploy with a response. We should keep the focus on things that matter to us, not on trying to block hateful scams that they aren't really serious about anyway. They are just throwing scraps of meat to their looney lemmings.

If I thought it had a snowball's chance in hell of being passed, I'd be railing against it, though.

Sometimes being gay makes you feel alone, even if you have a partner, and freinds. Kind of like you or just a few of you against a cold, hard world that hates you. That good freinds, who are not even gay but care about what happens to us, put up an avatar to show they support us warms my heart and makes the world seem a little warmer. And now I am crying.

Thank you, DUers!!

112. Equal rights for everyone. Period.
When I was eighteen years old, my roommates were a gay couple, together for years and married by Unity Church. One day, I stood, shocked and furious, next to Robert in the hospital lobby as he begged, pleaded, cajoled, charmed, cried and argued with the reception nurse, trying to get in to see Vince, whose cancer had finally caused him to collapse at work and he'd been brought in by ambulance. She refused to let Robert in because he "wasn't immediate family."

My activism was born that day.

It's my pleasure and honor to do everything I can. :grouphug:

to the ridiculousness of this. It was GREAT. He smacked down Bill Bennett (there's a video on here somewhere), and he pointed out that it was only an issue in election years - or years ending in even numbers. The whole show was great, not just the Bill Bennett part. Jon succeeded in making the whole thing the joke it is.

Anyway, I don't need thanks for my support - as someone else upthread said "it's a no-brainer"!

126. Repugs proving Mencken's "intelligence" remark true
20th century writer and satirist H.L. Mencken mocked what he perceived to be Americans' anti-intellectual bent when he said, "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."

Repugs are betting their IQ hasn't increased much in the 21st century either. How else can you explain anyone banking on support from the public for such a BS amendment borne from pure, visceral hatred?

I've listened to a fair amount of talk shows this week debating the issue. I did not hear any of its supporters give one well-reasoned, coherent argument as to how gay marriage threatens straight marriages and families. Nor were any effective rebuttals offered as to why this proposed law should not be viewed as a scapegoating of an entire class of American citizens.

May this amendment die the painful death it so richly deserves.
