To 'kick' is to post to a thread in order to make it rise to the top (most recent) of a forum page.

'Recommend' is to click on the "Recommend Topic for Greatest Page" choice at the bottom of an original post "OP".

"Kicked" means that you responded to a post, which pushes it back up to the top of the list. That gives more people an opportunity to see it.
"Recommended" means that you have recommended the thread for the "greatest" page, which gains the post even more exposure.
