Don't Let Tom DeLay Censor the Truth

The station managers threatened by DeLay need to hear from us to build the courage needed to stand up to DeLay and air our fact-based ad. Please, email the TV station managers and tell them not to censor the facts! GO »

Shaken by the bold exposé of corruption depicted in the ad we shared with you on Wednesday, Tom DeLay has resorted to bullying TV stations who planned to air the spots. On Monday, DeLay threatened to sue any TV station that airs the ad on the grounds that it casts him in a "false light." So far, unfortunately, the TV stations are bowing to DeLay's pressure and have temporarily pulled the ads off the air.

The station managers threatened by DeLay need to hear from us to build the courage needed to stand up to DeLay and air our fact-based ad. Please, email the TV station managers and tell them not to censor the facts!

The truth is, Tom DeLay has no grounds on which to threaten the TV stations, and is resorting to bullying tactics out of pure desperation. DeLay doesn't want a TV spot running in his district letting voters know that he received tens of thousands of dollars from convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff and Abramoff's associates and clients. <1> He certainly doesn't want his Houston constituents to know that Russian tycoons "contributed $1 million to group in 1998 specifically to influence DeLay's vote." <2>

The truth is, Tom DeLay is caught in his own web of corruption -- and, his constituents deserve to know the truth.

In breaking news, we just learned that Factcheck.org -- a non-partisan website affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania -- confirmed that the ad produced by Public Campaign Action Fund and the Campaign for America's Future is accurate and that DeLay's criticism is unfounded. The ad "contains nothing that is strictly false," and Rep. DeLay's lawyer "mischaracterized" what the ad said, wrote FactCheck.org on its website. <3>

We need to let the managers of the four TV stations struggling with the decision to air the ad know that the facts are on our side, and that they should not cave to DeLay's baseless bullying. See the facts for yourself along with the sources that back up each of the statements made in the ad. Then, email the TV station managers and urge them to stand up to DeLay and run the ad today!

Thank you very much for your support!

Sincerely,

Roger Hickey, Co-Director
Campaign for America's Future

P.S. One Houston TV station is conducting an online poll to gauge support for airing the ads. Please, make your voice heard and vote in this important online poll!

3. My letter
What kind of cowboys are you over at Brokeback Network?

The non-partisan website -- factcheck.org -- just confirmed that our ad's facts are accurate and DeLay’s criticism is unfounded. You can see for yourself here: http://www.factcheck.org/article371.html

I am outraged that you've chosen to side with Rep. Tom DeLay and prevent the viewers of your station from learning about Rep. DeLay's corruption.

I believe it is critical that the people in metropolitan Houston know more about the controversial matter in the ad -- namely, the $1 million from Russian tycoons allegedly to influence Tom DeLay's vote.

Please put this ad back on the air at once. Every time our press caves in to pressure from high-ranking, powerful government officials, a piece of the first amendment protection of the press dies.

I see what Texas is really like now that a spoiled draft-dogding fratboy from Connecticut can put on a cowboy hat and call himself a Texan.

Air the advertisement, unless you, too are all hat and no cattle.

4. I cannot imagine why someone like Tom DeLay
would ever be upset about a "misleading" ad. . .his entire career is nothing but a misleading advertisement for the wrong "values." One would think he would celebrate a concept which is so close to his own heart. Let him SUE. . .and then we can demand a DEMOCRATIC judge because, following DeLay's own example, a Republican judge is likely being paid off by the Party as well...lol
