Any Lawyers in the house?
How can a private non profit take over city streets and prevent me from getting signatures for a state initiative? It's my 1st amendment right to be on these streets.

3. CHUN
quote........
(CHUN) is a non-profit neighborhood organization that brings people together to share in: Preserving the Past, Improving the Present, and Planning for the Future of Greater Capitol Hill.

end quote......

They take over much of D/T Denver for the People's Fair. I was there today and was escorted off the premises by multiple police that told me I had no right to be there collecting sigantures for a state initiative. HOW can a non profit take over public streets and prevent me from exercising my 1st amendment right?

5. They probably have a permit.
Which might make it a private venue.

Don't take my word. I'm just guessing.

6. Go into greater detail...
have you got all the ordnances, regulations, and sections of the tax code at hand?
If so, you'll be alright.
Meticulous record-keeping is the watchword.

7. Supposedly a permit for a private venue
I get that...but how can the city do this and prevent me from exercising my 1st amendment rights. It's not like this is a private place of business. IT'S PUBLIC streets!

8. Well, the word "supposedly" leaves me
in doubt as to whether you've looked into All the myriad implications of organizing some street theater.
But We The People still have the glorious First Amendment.
Good on ya serryjw, but don't overlook the required business considerations. And each town is divergent as to what they consider speakable free speech.
Good On Ya!

9. Very simple
The first amendment is not absolute. There are limits on it, which include simple administrative details such as securing permits to march, requesting space in public buildings, etc.

If this is really a problem for you, I suggest you contact the city government. Find out the relevant part of the law or municipal code. Without the actual law or regulations in front of you, any answer you get will be speculative. If you find out that you were in the right, ie the police lacked authority to make you leave, then I would say make a copy of the section and carry it with you the next time you go out. That way you have the source at hand when the police stop you.
