N.C. Guard Short 300 Humvees As Hurricane Season Starts

http://www.wral.com/news/9304465/detail.html?taf=ral

With a nationwide equipment shortage forcing National Guard units to leave behind equipment in war zones, North Carolina units begin hurricane season with more than 300 Humvees missing from their fleet.

Most of the trucks were left in Iraq for incoming troops after a North Carolina brigade completed a combat rotation there last year. The Guard usually has about 750 Humvees in the state, said spokesman Capt. Matthew Handley.

The National Guard Bureau in Washington and the Army are working to get more equipment for North Carolina and other hurricane-prone states so that they can respond appropriately to any disaster. Guard Bureau spokesman Emanuel Pacheco said Wednesday that 169 Humvees and other equipment should reach the state by the end of the month.

Maj. Gen. William Ingram, commander of the North Carolina Guard, said the equipment shortage wasn't a critical concern.

"In my mind, we have enough equipment to respond to hurricanes," he said.

1. Wonder how many Guardsmen are deployed to Iraq? That's probably
a bigger problem in case of another Fran or Floyd...

3. Those things aren't realy Humvees though
They're overpriced Chevy Tahoes with uglier body panels. No more useful in an emergency than any other 4wd vehicle.
