The Third Reich's simple dichotomy of superior/inferior in terms of German/nonGerman, male/female, heterosexual/homosexual etc. provided an extremely seductive answer to people because of its simplicity. ( today just insert Christian right wing"conservatives" to this statement)
For various historical and cultural reasons, people who harbor deep fears of male-female equality can readily come to associate such equality with social and family disintegration.

Abortion was made illegal for Aryan women.

U.S. President George W. Bush has repeatedly voiced his intentions to overturn landmark decisions such as Roe vs. Wade and this debate will once again be brought to the forefront. As seen in the case of the Third Reich, a woman's control over her body does not begin or end there, but is indicative of a larger attitude towards gender roles and women's roles in society.


This is a sign of inequality between men and women not simply because men wouldn’t be treated this way, but also because treating women’s bodies as unequal cannot be done unless women themselves are perceived as unequal. 1. Hope this is not too tangential, but

I've always felt we should have a rule that if any religion or other group wants to restrict women's choices in any way, it should not be permitted unless the exact same or nearest possible equivalent is enforced to the same degree against men. E.g., burkas? No problemo, so long as all your men have to wear them, too.

Unfortunately, it's hard to find an equivalent re- pregnancy and the like; but in that area . . .

I've never understood why the 13th Amendment prohibiting involuntary servitude hasn't been invoked against forcing women to continue unwanted pregnancies. Whatever uncertainty there may be about when a foetus should be deemed a "person" deserving state protection, there can be no uncertainty that forcing someone to subject one's body to pregnancy is a form of servitude we wouldn't dream of imposing under other circumstances (can you imagine the outcry if we legislated even to require blood donations, or even organ donations from the dead, as contrasted with pregnancy and birth, which are SERIOUSLY more demanding and riskier than abortion?)

So, if the State or someone else can and wants to bring a foetus to term (taking it OUT of the mother so she doesn't have to carry it) and care for it, all WITHOUT significant imposition on the mother, fine. But should anyone have the right to FORCE any woman to do any of that? (Esp. when so little real effort goes into enforcing parental responsibilities of fathers.)

2. Women are unequal to men?

Some women do have some lustful desire to be the sex slave of a man and choose to give him the control of her body. It's a freeper thing. They hate women, with a vengeance, who can't see the freedom of being a sex slave. Twisted people we live with.

3. Don't shoot the messenger

But I have to point out that Pro-Choice has meant that responsible people have simply been outbred by the religious right. There has been a generation of people reared on the idea that "Pro-Life" is the only moral option. Many of these people are entering middle age in the next few years and should hopefully become a little more thoughtful as they have to deal with the screwed up agenda that has been force fed to them over the past quarter century.

If only I could get some of them to read a little Faludi now and then.

4. German attitudes about women were bad enough even before Hitler,

but of course much worse after he came to power. In 1920, Margaret Sanger was in Europe researching birth control methods. German doctors were quite uncooperative.

Margeret had never seen such clear lines drawn between male and female roles in society such as in Germany, and each time she left a doctor's office she was consumed with anger. The attitude of the men, especially those in the medical community, was that women were secondary citizens, breeders, who would bring about an increase or a leveling off of the population according to what the men decided was in the best interests of the state.
