''Here lies the body of Terry Schiavo, and the remains of the post-911 Republican Party''
A. Alexander, May 31st, 2006
It could be worse for Republicans -- okay, probably not.
Only one year ago, they were absolutely certain about their extremist agenda designed by their Taliban-like fanatical religious base. They bought into their own propaganda - the stuff that was issued regularly in Rove's patented "talking points" memos, and was quickly echoed by the mainstream media. In tandem with the Pravda-ish media, Republicans insisted the tiny, fringe, emotionally unhinged Christian element of the country held all the political power in the United States and as such, Republicans governed accordingly -- with, they believed, the blessing of Jesus Christ himself.
When historians are finally able to sort through the rubble of the neo-conservative, neo-extremist, borderline fascist, zealotry-driven Republican theocratic movement and the final epitaph is written, it will read: "Here lies the body of Terry Schiavo, and the remains of the post-911 Republican Party."
For it was in that moment - centered on her vegetative mind - that the true stygian nature of today's Republican Party was revealed for the first time in its entirety to the American people.
Until that moment, when George W. Bush was whisked -- under the cloak of darkness black as his very soul -- back to the White House to sign "The Bill" and Bill Frist foolishly diagnosed her condition from a video, Republicans had successfully conned the nation into believing they were the great defenders of freedom and liberty. DeLay, too, played his part and to be certain, all three men -- Bush, Frist, and DeLay -- must have confused the voices of Robertson, Falwell, and Dobson ringing in their heads with that of Jesus Christ. The Republican trio of so-called leaders couldn't have been more certain in their righteousness if Moses had appeared before them in the form of the Burning Bush.
