should the Senators and House members who still have souls (and the number seems to be dwindling) propose legislation that prohibits BushCo from attacking Iran without prior Congressional approval? . . .

what say you, elected Dems (and staff) who follow DU to keep up on what's really happening in the world? . . .

1. This is an election year in which most of those on the Hill still believe
that Americans want the government to be a daddy and go out and beat up the "bad guys" of the world. They will be all the more pleased to step into that role and lend support to another war because they fear losing the votes of a few loud bully boys and religious nuts. They will allow themselves to be "fooled again."

2. Oh yeah that outta work with our rubber stamp congress.
What needs to be done is an email campaign. Before shock and awe, the left knew that the case for war with Iraq was bullshit. There was enough information out there to convince people who weren't deriving their news from cable to discover that the basis for war was stinky. Find articles and do a massive email campaign to everyone you know. In the subject line put something like "Not Again" or "Fool me once...".

I thought about this idea when I read your post. I went looking for an article that was posted in Editorials and couldn't find it. But it was the IAEA's report about what they didn't find in Iran. We may not be able to stop it but, we can sure make people aware that they are experiencing deja vu.

4. Let's say:

1. All the dems voted for this legislation, and

2. Enough pukes defected from their leadership and also voted for it, thereby passing the legislation, thereby allowing one of four things to happen:

A. * vetoes the legislation and both Houses can't override the veto with votes, or

B. * vetoes the legislation, both Houses do override the veto and it passes, but * ignores the law anyway, or

C. * doesn't do anything, the legislation passes by default, but * ignores it anyway, or

D. * signs it, puts his "P.S." on it, announcing his executive perogative to ignore it in part or in whole as the Unitary Executive.

In other words, different paths, same destination: Nowhere.

5. I would not put it passed them to do a air war but not ground
I do not think we can do a law. After all he can not go to war with out Congress so I think he will do as he likes. Laws do not seem to stop Bush.

6. War is good for business. Somebody wants war with Iran.
Edited on Sun May-28-06 07:08 AM by Selatius
I'm just playing corporate devil's advocate here. A war with Iran translates into billions of dollars worth of defense contracts for bullets and bombs. Somebody will make a killing if war breaks out. The amount of money an individual CEO could make off the situation is beyond imagination.

Hot stock tip: Invest in companies like Boeing and General Dynamics and others. They produce things from laser guided bombs to satellite bombs and bunker busters, and they build our magnificant fleet of warplanes that we use to bomb peasants.

If there is war, I would say it will be an air war with the purpose of annihilating Iran's air defenses and airforce and knocking out their nuclear facilities.

7. BushCo has gelded Congress
and Congress just spread its legs wider to allow it. Rove will simply have Bush add one of his "signing statements" saying he'll do whatever the hell he wants. I hope someday soon BOTH sides of the aisle wake up and realize that they have let Bush destroy the Legislative branch. Maybe they were so blinded by K Street lobbyists, and stuffing pork into their own districts that they didn't see their own demise coming. I guess, like Hastert suddenly getting all high and mighty about checks & balances, there has to be a personal threat for a ray of light to penetrate. Congress allowed Bush to consolidate enormous, lop-sided power in the Executive branch and now they are screwed. Unfortunately, so are we the people!

9. I understand why it wouldn't work . . . but we need to try anyhow . . .
we're talking about the possibility of launching WWIII here . . . and to sit back and do nothing because we believe BushCo can't be beaten is not acceptable . . .

at some point, Congress is going to realize that the American people do NOT want this war, and that their actions now could well determine outcomes in this fall's elections . . . I'm sending letters to my senators and my rep asking them to initiate some kind of legislation to stop BushCo, and I hope others will do the same . . .
