Does anybody know why the DA asked for a year's delay in the trial

of the Duke students accused of rape? I mean, what the legal justification was when the request was made?

I understand that the judge granted the delay but I've never heard about the reason. Apparently the state of N.C., unlike the federal government, has no guarantee of a speedy trial.

1. I want to say I heard that he wasn't going to speed up the case
just because of who the defendents are...the case will fall into the schedule in line behind other existing cases.

3. Some miss information here
Everybody has the right to a speedy trial. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Now the defense can wave the right to a speedy trial but the DA CAN NOT.

4. Here's one of the articles I read that says otherwise.

"Suppose, for the sake of argument, that the players are guilty. What is the point of letting a bunch of rapists remain at large for another year? What about the dangers that they would pose to women on or off the Duke University campus?

"Now suppose that the players are innocent. Isn't it unconscionable to have this damning charge hanging over their heads for another year?

"The U.S. Constitution includes a right to a speedy trial, to keep people from being jerked around by unscrupulous or vindictive prosecutors who cannot prove the defendants have committed any crime. Prosecutors have to put up or shut up.

"This is not a federal case, however, and the laws of North Carolina do not require a speedy trial. Justice delayed is justice denied, whether the players are guilty or innocent."
