I live in one of the wealthiest communities on the planet and
today I was standing in for a sick friend at her card and gift shop on our tiny Main Street.

I became very weary of the Lite Rock station and switched to NPR around 4 o'clock.

A very elegant lady (around 80 years old) came in and started looking around.

As I was about to mention (in a half apology) that I was listening to NPR for a little news, Alberto Gonzales came on trying to explain the raid on Jefferson's office.

I hadn't gotten a word out of my mouth when this lady looked at the radio and blurted, "Fuck you, asshole!".

She then looked at me and told me she was sorry, but the guy just drives her crazy.

I was just laughing my ass off.

God, I love this town.

Folks here felt so let down about Kerry's lackluster campaign.

I have a pic of a brand new Bentley Azure convertible with a Kerry/Edwards sticker right on the trunk (paint) with the top down.

92. No, overall repubs remain favorites with the very wealthy.
Although I would agree that the trend has changed with the last few presidential elections as the wealthy in the northeast and west coast increasingly vote for dems. I suppose it makes sense in that both parties are increasingly subservient to the elite therefore voters tend to vote their cultural values (seeing litle difference on econmic issues).

18. Sounds like my M-I-L's best friend here in Upstate, SC.
J___ is an 85 year-old English war bride. Her husband, long dead, was a WW-II vet and a longtime football coach at Furman University. J___ is one of the few people in this town politically to the left of me. I pass on all my old copies of Liberal Opinion and The Nation to her. We both attend the same western branch of the Reformed Church of Scotland (Presbyterian USA).

J___ is lame with arthritis, but has a hollow leg reserved for good gin and fine wine. She can drink me silly. She loves dogs (just named a new pup after my late Sweet Sirius), and she swears in the dialect of the Queen of England. J____'s raw beauty at the age of 85 makes my heart stop even contemplating her as a younger woman.

My favorite words in the world are hers, saying in that lilting upper-crust British accent, "McLean, dear, what is the latest with our good friend Mr. Booosh?"

God, I love this town too!

Thanks for that story Tom.

I love to see them. I don't drive by them on Fridays any longer, as I moved to Tam Valley, but they sure did make my day. I would put in my 'Hair' soundtrack, and play the peace chant at top volume when I drove by:

WHAT DO WE WANT? (PEACE)

WHEN DO WE WANT IT? (NOW)

PEACE NOW! FREEDOM NOW! PEACE NOW! FREEDOM NOW !!

(and then turn it down real quick before the LSD song)

They loved it.

along with my parents, founded and sponsored that not-for-profit retirement community (The Redwoods) more then thirty year ago. Methinks you alienate yourself from those wonderful people when you refer to that magic place as an 'old folks home'. Heck, even Mrs T, who taught me a thing or two about wildlife lives there (is the Elizabeth Terwilliger Nature Education Foundation still based in Tiburon?). ;)

it is the longest-running continuing (bar/restaurant) biz in town.

Property deeds require a disclaimer stating that buyers in Old Town (up the hill, where I live)understand that said buyer will hear sounds from the waterfront. I am 70 feet up the hill and can recognise voices at Sam's deck.

They lived up on Belvedere Island until a couple of year ago when they sold the 'old sea captains' home they lived in for fifty years for a couple of million and moved into a bayside condo across from the ferry. She is very civilized in most situations, but uses shock language to ingage people in conversation. She's a kick in the pants and a whole lot more savvy then she appears. Oh, but her husband, Ben, is the one to meet! He will keep you on your toes. Hoot!

You have no idea what they were like back in the fifties and sixties when we had hope.

I sometimes have fantasies of fielding a force of octogenarians to raise 99 kinds of Hell with the Powers That Be.

63. Them octogenarians have never stopped doing what they had to do
Marin County is the most progressive area I have ever experienced and it didn't get that way by accident. Those neat old people were the strong leaders from a few years ago and they worked tirelessly at it because they believed they could make a difference. It is our job to connect with them and offer to carry the torch and make their dream a reality.

65. There is so much to be said on this subject.
If some party other than AARP could energize this base, the differnce could prove huge.

OK, that's it. I have had plenty to

61. Ah, another poor victim of B.I.T.S.
DO YOU SUFFER FROM B.I.T.S.?
(Bush-Induced Tourrette's Syndrome)

? Do you yell and scream at the television whenever President Bush gives a speech?
? Has your use of profanity increased dramatically over the past five years?
? Have you made up new curse words because the old ones just don't cut it anymore?
? Have you nursed a hangover because you used a republican speech to play a drinking game and the "trigger" word (WMDs, 9/11, terrorists) was repeated more than a dozen times in less than 15 minutes?

72. That's so cool. I was thinking today that if we had a small child
it would be very confused about why everyone in our government had the same name.

74. That took me a minute...
I was on the guitar practicing some 6string drone gospel stuff (Just as I am)

Every head is bow'd, every eye is closed...

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Hath broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, of that free love,
The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove,
Here for a season, then above,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

- Words: Charlotte Elliott, 1835
- Music: William B. Bradbury, 1839

Miss Charlotte Elliott was visiting some friends in the West End of London, and there met the eminent minister, Cesar Malan. While seated at supper, the minister said he hoped that she was a Christian. She took offense at this, and replied that she would rather not discuss that question. Dr. Malan said that he was sorry if he had offended her, that he always liked to speak a word for his Master, and that he hoped that the young lady would some day become a worker for Christ.
When they met again at the home of a mutual friend, three weeks later, Miss Elliott told the minister that ever since he had spoken to her she had been trying to find her Saviour, and that she now wished him to tell her how to come to Christ.
"Just come to him as you are," Dr. Malan said. This she did, and went happily away. Shortly afterward she wrote this hymn.
About these words, her brother said:
"In the course of a long ministry, I hope I have been permitted to see some of the fruit of my labor, but I feel that far more has been done by a single hymn of my sister's."

a Marin DU thing would be great.

I could reserve the deck at Sam's or the veranda at Guayma's.

90. Hey Tom, I'm in too, if the ferry goes from Jack London Sq to Tib!
Oakland is another one of those progressive gems - the community here is most excellent - and the Grand Lake Theater has become a great force in educating and invigorating the demo base here. We are progressive and truly multicultural - and all who enter should check their pretense at the door.

88. That's real estate, not personal worth.
The residents of Belvedere/Tiburon could buy the Vatican - cash.

How ridiculous is it that a town of 5000 has 3 yacht clubs?

The least expensive house in town is up for 1.29. And it has been condemned. A tear-down.
