Correction re. Dobbs and Chavez.
Edited on Thu May-25-06 06:19 PM by sadiesworld
Many apologies, I DO believe in retrospect that Lou Dobbs was referring to Cesar Chavez. I still maintain that the repug was in the process of making a cheap shot about Hugo when Lou cut him off. Lou went on to say that Chavez did not support illegal immigration b/c it drove down wages for US citizens, including those of latino/hispanic descent. That DOES sound more like Cesar (I think Hugo is more of a "we can take care of our own" kind of guy) and in retrospect Lou did refer to having "studied" Chavez some time ago.

Nonetheless, it was nice to see Lou giving "props" to Cesar.

Many apologies. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

1. Ugh.
Using Cesar Chavez for this anti-immigrant nonsense is like when they use Martin Luther King to attack affirmitive action.

2. Actually, Cesar Chavez was quite opposed to illegal immigration.
In the 60's, the dems shut down a temporary worker program at the behest of Chavez. Following that shutdown, unprecedented gains were made in wages and benefits for migrant farm workers.

3. Yeah, yeah.
And Martin Luther King wanted us to all live in a color blind society.

6. The principles of organized labor worked.
I'm sorry you find that offensive.

4. LOL I wondered about that
Thanks for the update.

I know Dobbs has discussed Cesar Chavez quite a bit.

Whenever he hears the name "Hugo Chavez," I think he cringes and worries the The Populists Are Coming! The Populists Are Coming! It probably motivates his programs more than people realize. He's an educated economist and can see the writing on the wall.

5. Yeah, your post was the one that got me thinking about the
"studied Chavez" part.

I guess I got a bit carried away in the excitement of the moment thinking Lou was having an insight into neoliberalism. I still maintain that he has the best show on cable "news", but that sure as hell isn't saying it's perfect!

7. When I read his transcripts, I'm fascinated by his guests
Really like it when he has the local radio DJ panels. They have that "let's cut through the shit" way of discussing the issues of the day.

9. Absolutely!
You hear things that are NEVER uttered elsewhere on the idiot box, even on Democracy Now. It's the sort of populism and common sense that makes red and blue almost irrelevant. There's a true 3rd way in there somewhere.

10. 3rd way
Exactly! And you know he knows it. He's speaking to the populists you can't get to the polls by offering to ban gay marriage or abortion. They see those as strictly non-political privacy rights issues, and they'd rather talk about the price of gas.

I know far too many of those "populists" who watch him who'll quickly tell you we should be spending the billion$ we're blowing in Iraq on national health care.

Yeah, makes red and blue irrelevant.
