Myself and family included... however, we are extremely lucky to have him as an advocate for a number of environmental and sustainability issues. And a closer look would convince you he isn't as different as you might think. He lives far more modestly than many here on the DU.
And you're right about him being able to sit and think about things like this, and that was a big reason he created VoiceYourself.com. It's a one-stop shop filled with lots of ideas, resources, and tips to lessen your footprint on Mother Earth that don't necessarily cost more. I know they're working on some upgrades to the site, but if you get in and dig around in there, you can find a lot of great stuff.
I know exactly the day to day squeeze you're talking about - I live it every day, too. Much of this I believe is a direct result of corporate greed: i.e., why are executives making 50x average pay while you have to work two jobs just to pay the bills? What kind of society would allow this?
I've noticed if you follow the suggestions from his site, you generally end up moving away from supporting large corporations and consumerism in general. I really believe one way we can change society is through supply and demand: if we tell these corporations we don't want what they're buying by not giving them money, they will be forced to change. It's not THE answer, but every little bit helps.
