After a local candidate forum, I had a long chat with a conservative Republican running for state Assembly. I've interviewed him before for our local paper, and he struck up a conversation.
He wanted to find issues on which both parties might agree. I said the most important issue Republicans should take seriously was election fraud.
At first, he started talking about dead people voting. I said we need to address ALL forms of voting fraud, especially electronic voting machines, which take localized fraud to a much broader level, allowing widespread vote shifting of entire counties or even states.
I mentioned I'd just won a national journalism award for reporting on the very real dangers of hacking/election theft using electronic voting machines. He knew something about the topic, recalling how in some places, more votes were cast than voters.
"Well, if we agree that vote hacking or rigging is possible, then you should be concerned about your own election," I said, noting that he faces 4 challengers in the Republican primary--including one endorsed by our powerful GOP Congressman. "After all, they could could rig it so your opponent would win, right?"
His jaw dropped -- and I could swear I saw the light bulb turn on.
