Catholic group upset at Madonna 'crucifixion'
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Less than 12 hours after Madonna crucified herself on a mirrored cross, the Catholic League expressed its discontent with the concert stunt.

The controversial diva wore a crown of thorns and sang while hanging from a cross during Sunday night's opener of her "Confessions" world tour at The Forum in Inglewood.

"Knock off the Christ-bashing," Catholic League president Bill Donohue said in a statement Monday. "It's just pathetic."

Though Donohue said that Madonna "has been spicing up her act with misappropriated Christian imagery for a long time," he thought that her faith in Kabbalah might inspire new respect for religion.

"I guess you really can't teach an old pop star new tricks," he said. "Poor Madonna keeps trying to shock. But all she succeeds in doing is coming across as a boring bigot."

A message left with Madonna's spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

i am so sick of these headlines...."Catholic Group"; "Scientologist Group"; "Loony Right Wing Fringe Group" upset with ____________ <insert scapegoat here>.

When will these "Groups" realize that the bigger stink they make, the more people want to see or hear for themselves, whatever the "Group" is upset about? :eyes:

5. Just as we advocate separation of Church and State
Just as we advocate separation of Church and State, so should we respect the Freedom of Religion” as provided by our constitution. And is so doing should we make allowances for Madonna using a mockery of her former religion while condemning the Bush administration for persecuting people of the Muslim faith.

Damm tough adhering to “Higher Moral Values”

Damm easy to become a hypocrite…..

15. Wow, what a depressing little factoid there
Shows exactly how little history, especially womens' history, the public knows. I wouldn't even put Madonna among the top sixteen greatest women entertainers, much less sixteen Greatest Women in American History.

Pathetic how pop culture has come to dominate our coutry's concious, at the expense of historical knowledge. No wonder we seemed doomed to continue to repeat mistakes, nobody is studying their history:eyes:

36. That's pretty funny
As I took this professor's class in the early 90s when Rush was really gaining popularity and Madonna's Sex book had come out. In fact, a person in my dorm had a copy of it, and she brought it out to the lounge one evening, and I took it and read passages from it for everyone's amusement (I'm a guy). Talking about my vagina proved to be quite interesting.

It's not as if this is the first time she's pissed them off.

I'm not a huge fan, but I did like both the song and video of "Like A Prayer".

26. "Poor Madonna..."
Sheeesh. She's more than likely very happy and fulfilled with her life and is immediately recognizable by millions world-wide. I only know what Bill Donohue looks and sounds like because Penn and Teller featured him on their show, "Bullshit!" for the episode called, "Holier than Thou." They pointed out that Bill had tried to stop P&T from being Superbowl entertainment one year because of a private performance they gave that involved their (probably just Teller) being crucified, but they were letting them on their show to give his opinion. They then proceeded to call him an asshole. :)

30. heh, Bill Donohue
I think certain entertainers do things specifically to piss off Bill Donohue. I'm thinking specifically of the South Park episode with the bleeding statue of Mary. He's just so over-th-top and predictable in his condemnations; it must be fun to push his buttons.

37. My perspective, as an unapologetic Madonna fan:
First, I should say, I didn't see the act, although I have tickets for when she comes here!

:woohoo:

But, Madonna makes no secret of being a lapsed Catholic. And yes, she has a history of tweaking the nose of the Church.

The most effective "criticism" anyone could ever launch at her would be to ignore her.

But, since when does Jesus have the monopoly on being crucified? The Romans crucified thousands of people! Christians are encouraged to (figuratively) take up the cross and follow in Christ's footsteps.

Without having seen what Madonna did, I speculate that what she did could be interpreted entirely differently from what Bill Donohue accuses her of.

GO MADONNA!!

:loveya:

42. Madonna has been a vocal opponent of the war.

Her contribution to educate her audience is less valid than Neil Young's because she has tits?

The only thing more tired and old than Madonna are the efforts to dismiss her.

She's a force of nature. Love her or hate her, there's no denial of the fact that she is an immoral entertainer.

I'm happy that she's still able to push people's buttons. And it's the same people as it was 20 years ago. Hilarious!
