Free Leonard Pelletier YES. Free Ice Cream No. What gives?
The Coventry Street Fair is a yearly celebration here in Cleveland, Ohio. There is a housing cooperative and private owners on the street and as well as a street association that puts on the festival every year in May. It has a 35 years or so history of traditions that have morphed over the years.
There is a stage with wonderful music and poetry all weekend. Permits are sold to vendors to sell foods and crafts in booths along the street. No charge or minimal charge for public service space. Homeowners could vend off their porches. This year the street association banned sales from porches and this was not taken lightly by the folks that sold ice cream for years off of their porch.
This homeowner decided to go ahead and set up his ice cream freezer on the porch again but chose to give it away for FREE.
I have never seen so many people scream foul over free ice cream.
The same people that used to shout FREE ANGELA DAVIS or FREE LEONARD PELETIER were now saying no to FREE ICE CREAM.
The street was split between those that sided with the free ice cream and those that sided with the corporate ice cream vendor who lost business as a result.
Not all chose sides as some were saddened by the rift and could empathize with both camps so some degree. Seeing hippies age and grow into NO FREE ICE CREAM CURMUDGEONS was too much for me to bear in this day and age.
I'm sure that there was more to it but it put a damper on my enjoyment of this years festival. I hope that they get their act together to resolve their differences. This festival takes lots of work and commitment and is truly a successful grassroots endeavor to date for the progress wive and alternative community here in Cleveland.
