4. so long as we take care to keep our party clean and above board.
We are not immune to stupid fucks taking bribes and voting like idiots, unfortunately.

It would be wrong to say our criminal class is better than their criminal class.
But this is still good news.

6. Neocons rarely care about domestic policy.
It's more about their world vision and they will hitch a ride on either party to ascend. They are parasitic.

7. Yup. Everytime someone tries to tell me Bush isn't a 'real conservative'
I remind them the same thing. You guys weren't even strong enough to stop your own party from getting hijacked. Why should anyone trust you to protect the United States?

10. right just WHAT IS
a "real conservative?" I've been thinking about this lately. You have your 'social conservatives' and your 'fiscal conservatives' and your hardcore fundies and your neo-con war-mongering world dominators.

Just WHAT is a real conservative? Does anyone know any? Is there such a thing as a conservative who has anything good to offer at all? Or are they just a breed that is hopefully doomed to extinction (in the bigger picture of history, the human family tree)? Although I have a couple of older family members who are Repugs, they seem to be "fiscal conservatives'--one a business man, the other a doctor. They don't make waves, but they quietly support some kind of notion of "good Repuglican values" in their heads, which bottom line, benefits them financially. The businessman likes to drive jaguars and now just monitors his investments. The doctor does contribute to that organization for putting American doctors in foreign countries to do surgeries etc. Both of these guys are nice enough to your face but subscribe to a subtle elitism--that they are very special and above the hoi-polloi, y'know.

Anyway IS there a profile of a "real conservative" anymore? Is there ANYthing redeeming about such a conservative? Or are they all just representing racism, fundyism, twisted family values, economic predation, exploitation and other forms of selfishness.

and understand that going in a rightward direction now will be ultimately rejected by a larger proportion of the populace than they thought. A losing game.

I'm wondering if we aren't looking at a completely different dichotomy after the extreme excesses of Bushco... for example:

those who value integrity vs. those who don't (true morality)
those who care about the country's future vs. those who don't (vision, conscience)
those who are stuck-in-the mud vs. those who aren't (flexibility)
(or some other more definitive bipolar comparison)

--I'm thinking that what traditionally describes the differences in political affiliations, Repug and Dem, such as "fiscally conservative" etc, doesn't make sense --all of a sudden this old dichotomy looks completely worn out> I mean if you are a Repug, once you AGREE to ally with the Neocons (or fundies) or any large group that is inherently negative and narrow-minded, how can you say you are benefitting society? What is a "true conservative" anymore? Is it a myth--was it ever real? Cause it sure is not working. It seems that at least the Democrats don't ally with any large groups that are destructive or exploitative...well take that back, they DO ally with corporate interests (but perhaps to a less exploitative degree, fair to say) Also we have NOT seen many of these so-called "true Republicans" stand out in congress over the last 5 years--they have voted right down the line with the Neocons, and now that the Neocons have been shown to be the abusers they are, it seems the whole Republican party alliegiances and so-called 'values' become tainted.

So how can progressive values overcome 'conservative' (ie. now seen to be basically 'backward') thinking? There is an opportunity here that if the Dems miss, they are really out-of-touch.

26. thanx!
with that encouragement I think I will write it up and send to Dean et al.--good idea, can't hurt. :)

Thank you for putting up the topic in the first place. It just hit me earlier today...the whole notion of what a "real conservative" is has been shattered...and your post corroborated that. The Dems are also in the same churning sea of confusion now, repositioning, though better off than the Pugs by a long shot. But they really are going to have to chart a brave new course IMO if they are to take advantage of this. Crucial to do that fairly soon, I totally agree.

They should have all moved to Canada with the Tories in 1776, since they are so keen on royalty and kings and queens. Screw them!
