Federal budget SLASHES diabetes research, education
Think of what the money spent in iraq could have done . . .

=======

In Worcester, Mass., scientists are boxing their test tubes at a shuttered laboratory where just two years ago they isolated a chemical that triggers diabetes. In Oklahoma City, health workers faced with soaring rates of Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, question whether they can afford to continue to offer classes where diabetics learn how to avoid foot amputations. In Columbia, S.C., diabetes educators say they need more money to expand a program that uses the pulpit in black churches to preach the importance of a healthy diet and exercise.
Across the country, health care officials who rely on federal money to help stem the growing epidemic of Type 2 diabetes say they have become increasingly frustrated and alarmed.
Diabetes is the only major disease with a death rate that is still rising — up 22 percent since 1990 — and it has emerged as the leading cause of kidney failure, blindness and nontraumatic amputation.
But public health experts inside and outside the world of diabetes care say federal spending on the disease has historically fallen short of what is needed. And now the government has cut diabetes funding in the budgets for this year and next, despite the explosive growth in a disease that now figures in the deaths of 225,000 Americans each year.

3. I am appalled
Or, better, continue to be appalled. As the spouse of a diabetes sufferer, I have seen so much of the damage the disease can do. Hubby is on dialysis, has had laser surgery for retinopathy, new lenses for cataracts, and is on insulin. Diabetes kills slowly and painfully. A number of patients at the dialysis clinic are also missing limbs, most likely from diabetes.

Diabetes remains one of the major causes of blindness and kidney failure. And the cretins have cut R&D funding? Aaaaggh.

Oh, I should mention that Hubby is only 59.

5. My grandmother has diabetes...her kidney function is so poor
Edited on Tue May-16-06 09:04 PM by MadMaddie
that they are talking about putting her on dialysis....she is 83 years old...I know she has had a good life but the US could have been on the path for a cure...maybe not in her life but still....

The sciences are dying in America.....and it doesn't seem that people understand the significance of this....

7. Now, in all fairness, I was talking to a millionaire the other day...
and one of his yachts has a scratch in it, and the other one is only a hundred footer. Surely these lazy diabetics have to be willing to make a sacrifice so millionaires can get the yachts they so richly deserve. :sarcasm:

8. Just insuring Billions for the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Industry
The Federal Government cannot risk curing a disease that guarantees Billions in profits for the Pharmaceuticals and the Medical Industry. That is the real reason why Bush refused funding stem cell research, because it threatened the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Industry profits.

The Federal Government is not Of By and For the People, it has become the Corporate Government Store and the People are it's servants.

10. I was hoping someone would point this out
Diabetes and cancer BOTH fill the coffers of the pharmaceutical companies.
You can rest assured that they will make you feel better--most of the time the little pill that makes you feel better will cost you $100 apiece...but it is only palliative...not curative.
They won't ever cure either of these things, they are cash cows because of all of the side effects that ALSO need to be treated pharmaceutically.

12. Its nauseating.
I hate that man/boy so much, I just want to scream! I see all the cuts made in the budget in the past few years and for next year. They love to cut Billions out for help for children, students, disabled, elderly and wonder how they will be able to live with these changes? You just can't live on air, even if you're living in the streets!

14. I am curious about disabled benefits
Do you know how I find that out BB? I have a nephew with Cerebral Palsy and he is more dependent on his benefits the older he gets. His mother is a repuke and I am curious how she will take the cuts, if there are any.

but if it involves someone's wellbeing, and they are not millionaires, you can bet Bush doesn't give a crap.
