Firstly I must preface my comments with this: I agree completely that Sean Hannity is a first class jerk. However, let's get real here folks. As bad as this rape situations is, the racism issues at Duke, and how people like Hannity are dealing with it, I think it is important to put this all into some perspective.
The reality is that the FBI believes that 72 out of every 100,000 women in the United States are forcibly raped each year. That is an astonishing number and should bother anyone with an ounce of moral fiber. We, as members of a civilized society, should be aware of this and have a public discourse on this sobering issue.
With that said, I am personally appalled at the amount of coverage this one rape allegation has been given, and the very fact that it is discussed so often in this political forum. Every rape is horrible! This one is not unlike the countless others that occur on a daily basis, but receive no press coverage. This situation is being treated by the press in the same way they treat stories about Britney Spears. And what's worse, we are getting drawn into it.
Wasting time and energy on this sensationalized news item is exactly what Hannity and folks like him want us to do. They would rather us discuss this on forums such as this rather than issues that we can actually do something about. He has been able to make himself the issue, rather than what we, as caring and compassionate people on the left side of the political spectrum, can do to help solve the problems in our country. Rather than discuss him or this particular rape case here, perhaps our time would be better served discussing how we can come up with ideas to support people who have been raped, or even how we can get the amounts of rapes that occur down.
Hannity is a ultra-right wing corporate tool, no questions about that. But the more time we spend making the likes of him, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, or whomever, the issue, the less time that we spend working to make the changes we all would like to see take place. People like him, who spew ignorance and hatred, only lose their power and influence when others who oppose them are willing to stand on the merits of their own beliefs and ideals.
