Opposition and support for rumored nominee for CIA director

WASHINGTON -- Reaction is mixed to the rumored front-runner for director of the CIA.

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee said he would oppose the nomination of General Michael Hayden. Republican Peter Hoekstra told “Fox News Sunday'' the spy agency should not have military leadership during a turbulent time among intelligence agencies.

Members of the Senate committee that would consider President Bush's nominee also expressed reservations. Republican Saxby Chambliss said Hayden's military background is a problem in these times.

But Republican Senator John McCain said he likes the idea of a Hayden nomination. He told CBS's ''Face the Nation'' that Hayden “is a very highly qualified individual.''
