Bigotry abounds at Illinois Republican prayer meeting
Edited on Sat May-06-06 11:15 AM by newyawker99
Hate speech, bigotry, a Fox News kook, and Republicans using religion to pander to the right wing fake Christians.

Prayer event sparks debate

A table of literature gave those who attended a National Day of Prayer celebration in Wheaton Thursday a sense of the messages they’d hear.

The “Pro-Life Action Guide” and a large Protect Marriage-Illinois sign advertised conservative Christian viewpoints that would play a prominent role.

But it was a comment by nationally known conservative leader Sandy Rios that, while seemingly well-received at the time, left some in attendance stammering a day later when asked if they agreed with her.

A radio host and occasional Fox News contributor, Rios spoke of abortion, gay clergy and the murder of innocents like Terry Schiavo as “perversions of the Bible.”

But it was a comment about God and Islam that prompted some strong objections.

Friday, several officials who attended the prayer ceremony and applauded Rios said the praise was for her message of turning to God daily for help.

1. Funny how the press doesn't think gay bashing is bigotry
but comparisons between gods are. :eyes:

And yes! Thinking it's a sin, and justifying it through 6000 year old books written and re-written by men is bigotry.

2. Geez, I must be getting old...
I can remember a time when Christians didn't recognize the existence of other gods.

4. Now there's a whole God Menu
You can even get bigotry appetizers and defense of marriage desserts! But the featured main course is Jesus.

6. The applause for Rios was for . . . what?
How do those "several officials" know what every person in that room had in his or her heart, what every hand clap was for? And isn't it odd that apparently not one person in the room, at the time Rios was making her odious remarks, stood up to say, "Wait a second, wasn't it the 'Christian' nation, armed to the teeth with conventional and nuclear weapons, that started two wars in the last five years against 'Muslim' nations?" What is this "grace and mercy" bullshit? How much grace, how much mercy, did we as an allegedly Christian nation show right after September 11, and how much grace, how much mercy, have we, the wealthiest nation on the planet given to the poor and the needy around the world, or even right here in our own country?

Illinois Republicans "declined comment."

8. They are afraid
Illinois Republicans all pander to the pseudo-religious right wing kooks that have taken over the party. Either they are as nuts as they are, or they keep a low profile and do what they are told.
I talked to one Republican state representative who privately admitted she thinks the religious reich bunch are loons, but she knows they will toss her butt out in a second if she doesn't vote their way on social issues. It's that kind of cowardice that has made the Republican party in Illinois the shame that it is. When they ran Alan Keyes for senator and got 30% of the vote you would have thought they'd learned something, but the extremists have control of the party by the short hairs. It may play well in red states but it doesn't go over to well here.

10. That's what's baffling to me
Hasn't the GOP in Illinois sunk low enough? I mean, I'm way the hell out in Oregon, and Illinois Republicans are a joke even west of the Snake River. What would it take for a new Republican caucus to form in Illinois and oust the bigots? Or maybe they really like being represented by the faces of nutjobs such as Alan Keyes and Sandy Rios?

Oh well, it's good to see Republicans being held accountable for their words for a change.
