HARTFORD, Conn. --U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman's support for the war in Iraq has not hurt him among Connecticut voters and Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell's approval rating remains high, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday.
The poll shows Lieberman, a Democrat, with a 59 percent approval rating among registered voters, compared with 63 percent in a similar poll in February.
The poll also shows that in a primary, Lieberman would beat Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont 65 percent to 19 percent, compared with 68 percent to 13 percent gap in the February poll.
Lieberman's numbers remain high despite his perceived closeness with President Bush, who has a 25 percent approval rating in Connecticut, according to the poll. The survey also found that 61 percent of voters oppose the Iraq war but only 15 percent would vote for a candidate based only on his or her stance on the issue.
The poll found 90 percent of voters have not heard enough about Lamont to form an opinion.
