Where is the Love? by Black Eyed Peas
OK, give me a break, I have a 12-year old son. Yesterday, on the way to Taekwondo he brought their Elefunk CD with him. He said I needed to hear this song.

Halfway through, he looked at me and saw the tears in my eyes. "I knew you would do that", he said.

"Nation's dropping bombs,
chemical gases filling lungs of little ones,
with ongoing suffering as the youth die young.
So, ask yourself, is the lovin' really caused,
so i can ask myself really what is going wrong
in this world that we livin' in.
People keep on givin' in,
makin' wrong decisions,
only visions of the dividends.
Now we respectin' each other
and i've my brother.
A war's going on,
but the reason's undercover.
The truth is kept secret
and swept under the rug"

People killin', people dyin'.
Children hurtin', even cryin'.
Can you practice what you preach,
and would you turn the other cheeck?
Father, Father, Father, help us.
Send some guidence from above.
These people got me, got me, questionin'
where is the love?"

4. For something a little angrier...
"Black Rain" from Ben Harper's latest:

BEN HARPER
Black Rain
Written by: Harper/Yates

You left them swimming for their lives
Down in new orleans
Can't afford a gallon of gasoline
With your useless degrees and contrary statistics
This government business is straight up sadistic

Now you don't fight for us
But expect us to die for you
You have no sympathy for us
But still i cry for you
Now you may kill the revolutionary
But the revolution you can never bury

Don't speak to us like we work for you
Selling false hope like some new dope we're addicted to
I'm not a desperate man but these are desperate times at hand
This generation is beyond your command

And it won't be long
'til the people flood the streets
To take you down
One and all
A black rain is gonna fall

This may gross you out, though, on this particular song Justin Timberlake sings the chorus. I did some research to get the words and found this out, I thought it was the female lead singer.:)

But hey, I can't diss anyone who would sing a song like this.

8. But why did they have to do "My Humps"
Worst. Song. Ever. That song ruined the BEPs for me.

9. Don't know that song, never really was a fan 'til this one.
Is it really that bad?

Figures, just as I decide to give the BEPs a listen they have to go and screw it all up for me.

12. It's that bad. It's atrocious.
It's got this girly-girl epitome of all the jiggly warbling pop singers I can't stand sort of hiccupping about her "hump" and if that doesn't make you gag, the rhyme with "lovely lady lumps" will.

18. Worse than "Laffy Taffy"?
"I'm a jolly rancher you can suck on me all day long"?

It's truly difficult sometimes having a 12-year old. Now I know what my parents were going through, and why they kept yelling "turn that stereo down!" all the time.

11. Oh dear gods. That's them, too?
Now I hate them again, so I suppose they walk off the field with the zero they started with. :argh:

10. I loved that song when I used to hear it at work. Had no clue
who it was, because I like almost NOTHING that any radio station will play that came out in the last ten years--but I heard it a dozen times before I heard the LYRICS. It's so cleverly hidden as reggae-flavored harmless pop that it sneaks right through. Brilliant. Thanks for letting me know who to send my props to. : )

15. I LOVE that song.
And that's why I cut them slack for the dreadful "My Humps."

I'll have to go look for the video now; I've had the CD for ages, but never saw the video.

19. It is a good question. Where IS the love?
The neocons have done very well in creating so many divisions, so many ways to alienate one group from another.

It seems to even have permeated the culture at this time, so that many on the opposite side of the political spectrum seem inclined to do likewise.

And as all this goes on and people talk about the propriety or impropriety of Stephen Colbert's brilliant performance at White House Correspondents Dinner, the march to bombing Iran seemingly goes on.

It may be improper to tell the truth to power right in the power's face, they tell us.

What about the propriety of the countless crimes against humanity already done and currently contemplated by that same administration?

That is where the line has been crossed, and one major reason why we have to ask ourselves and each other "Where IS the love?"
