"I am ashamed of this country for the inaction I saw everywhere."
Edited on Tue May-02-06 08:31 PM by understandinglife

<clip>

What I saw was a national disgrace. An inexcusable, irresponsible, borderline criminal national disgrace. I am ashamed of this country for the inaction I saw everywhere.

I mentioned my outrage to the mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, on Thursday. He shook his head and said, "Tell me about it.'' Disgust dripped from his voice.

What are we doing in this country?

"It's been eight months since Katrina,'' said Jack Bowers, my New Jersey friend and Habitat for Humanity guide through the Lower Ninth Ward, as he took us through deserted streets where nothing, absolutely nothing, was being done about the wasteland that this place is.

"Eight months!" .......

What, in_deed, are we doing in this country? ...

Peace.

1. Wow, I like Peter King's sports columns and appearances on Inside The
NFL.

I've enjoyed his articulate and informed approach to the stories he covers.

I really love this article. MKJ

2. We're bringing peace and democracy to Iraq at $2 billiion a week.
We're helping oil companies and the rich get richer with tax cuts.

4. I was just talking to my Sister & her SO who went to the Jazz Festival
and they were telling me the same thing. They were totally freaked out anyway, by the urban makeover (in more ways than one).

5. I never believed for a second..
.. that this administration was serious about rebuilding NO. It's not going to happen unless we get those frauds out of the WH.

6. and today FEMA announced that they were . . .
closing their recovery offices in New Orleans . . .

in a rational world, tomorrow's headlines should read "Bush Abandons New Orleans" . . . nationwide, and in BIG print . . .

7. In order to abandon, you must first cherish
There was never any cherishing of the city or its people --- supposedly his people as much as mine or yours.

What has happened in NO was an act of nature. I can even go so far as to say those who built the levees thought they would be enough. I cannot, however, under any circumstances, excuse the aftermath. People who care about others cannot even look at the photographs without having their hearts ripped out. A person in a position of power who *CHOOSES* to do nothing is not a person at all.

9. Unfortunately, too many people are doing their "own thing"
and are "too busy" to help anyone else. Or they have a different agenda. Lots of excuses. Too many people are just unmotivated.

12. We can cut-n-run from New Orleans, one of our finest cities.
But it's wrong to want to "cut-n-run" from Iraq.

GOP - They cut-n-run.. From American cities...

I'm not tired of it, i'm not sick of. I'm fucking pissed off because of it. I'm embarrassed by it!

When is enough enough? When do WE AMERICANS take to the streets en-masse, ala our friends from the south? They have shown us how it's done.

13. It's not just New Orleans. That entire region is a mess.
On the radio this week (Air America) they talking aout still finding bodies. STILL FINDING BODIES!

Then I wake up today to the morning talk shows interviewing Laura Bush. She's saying things are getting better, kids are back in school and she wants to help them with their reading skills.

My first thought was Hmm, wonder if she expects these reading skills to improve through the use of the teaching software that Georgie's brother developed and mommy Babs's Katrina donation was earmarked for.

Stupid bitch.

These people have no sense of shame.

16. My church - UU - had a small group go to rural Mississippi
They were amazed at the devastation and lack of clean-up.

The only other people they saw regularly there were other church groups. Once in a while you would see the Red Cross or Salvation Army, but for the most part only church volunteer groups.

This government hasn't just abandoned New Orleans. It's also abandoned a lot of rural Mississippi and Louisiana. Areas that are poor and disproportionately black. What a surprise.:sarcasm:
