Colbert BRILLIANTLY forced everyone to confront themselves,...
,...and the truth about them and their lives.

That's all I have to say EXCEPT that, I believe his iron-spined delivery will be remembered for decades.

Thank you for the opportunity to post my perspective. :7

his speech. I bet * ranted all night. I have visions of him having his night ruined.

4. Yes, I don't see any need to narrow it down to one target or another
He hit them all, and scored bulls-eyes, over and over and over again.

8. He exposed the EXTREME moral equivocations. THE TARGET!
When you hit it, spot on, some people grin, some laugh, some appreciate it, most can't handle it because they are forced to look at the monsters within themselves.

"Good night and,...good luck". He made history,...and he's prolly puking 'cause that kind of courage is shocking on one's body.

14. I didn't find it a LOL kind of experience at all
It felt like a historic event to me, too, but maybe that's because we needed something like this so badly.

18. I guess I just find joy,...in certain moments,...even though I know,...
,...they cause others' illusions to become completely disassembled. I guess I'm losing my sense of empathy for people who quit their own sense of empathy.

Does that make me "bad"?

If so, I must be "bad", in that sense.

21. I feel the same kind of joy
a savage satisfaction, in fact.

So I guess I'm utterly heartless in that regard.

24. No. It's a joy in the potential of humanity.
The savage is what has been exposed, and we feel joy at the exposure of those who would be savage. I'll never be confused at those aspects of individuals or feel regret in my joy when the savagery is exposed. I hope you never will be confused, as well.

10. Good grief, the way people are hyping a simple comedic performance
albeit one that was more-or-less biting in its viewpoint, is just ridiculous.

11. Okay...name one other person who has, on live television,....
...publicly ridiculed Herr Busch, his supporters, the military, and the media. And remember, the primary object of his commentary was sitting less than ten feet away.

Just one.

If you thought what Colbert did was a "simple comedic performance", you clearly missed the boat.

12. There was Michael Moore a couple of years ago
during the Oscars (though, of course Bush wasn't present; and I'm not a real fan of Michael Moore anyway).

I think what people are forgetting is that Colbert is an entertainer who was supposed to roast Bush for this occasion. He managed to make some good political commentary -- especially about the meek media, but in the end, it's just a roast.

I don't need to personally know Stephen Colbert at all to tell that he considers himself more of an entertainer than a political commentator.

13. Sorry. As pointed out in the post-- The fascist wasn't there.
Moore's diatribe is in no way close to what Colbert's was.

Try again.

It goes beyond what a person is (documentary film maker, comedian, pundit, etc.) It is about a citizen speaking truth to power and pointing out the hypocrisy and lies directly to the people that make them and perpetuate them.

Colbert was the first. If folks are upset with that, and/or cannot handle that he was-- this speaks more about them than Colbert.

comparison make.

Thought that was just a bit clear in the post.

16. Colbert, is viewed far more a non-denominational political individual.
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 04:53 PM by Just Me
Hell, as far I as know, he's even viewed more anti-liberal by the RW.

HE FUCKING STRUCK LIGHTNING,...,...at the discomfort of a room filled with people seeking another "feel good" experience.

When I am seventy or so years old, there will be a movie about this man who IMPOSED reality upon all those comfort-seeking people. I will LOVE that movie,...and remember how this country was brought down to it's least common human denominator by government-sponsored illusory and exploitation!!!

Meanwhile, the "LOVE FOR MONEY" rather than principles CM is re-playing the "Bush Subconscious" drama because is pretty and funny and a distraction from REALITY.

25. The point is: Colbert's speech was not a "simple comedic performance"
What he said was incredibly pointed...it would have been so even in another time when critical, political satire was more prevelant in our society. Today it's virtually non-existent.

He got in several direct hits on the hypocricy, lies, and stupidity of the Bush junta, the military/political elites, and the corporate-owned media without pulling his punches once. When was the last time we saw something like that, particularly right in front of a captive audience of the country's political and social elite?

Perhaps DU'ers are going a bit off the deep end in their glee over Colbert's performance...but, God Almighty, it's been six fucking years of a bootlicking press, a cowed media in general, a distracted and manipulated population, and the damn fascistic elite in this country pissing on 100 years of social progress.

Allow us a fricking laugh and a moment of celebration for someone finally saying to these aristocratic assholes what we've all been saying to each other for years, why don't you?

27. Yes. The man took aim, fired and HIT "reality" and "facts" and "truth".
Perhaps, "joy" or "laughter" fails what I felt when he spoke. Maybe, RELIEF and HEALING and just pure SATISFACTION better defines my reaction at Colbert's presentation.

All I can say is, his words, this evening, will live within me until the day I die. He was powerful and his influence, priceless,...to me.

19. I especially love all the repukes looking around with the "WTF?" look on
lemon-puckered ugly faces.

It was priceless.

That along with THE SMIRK and pursed lips of the WAR CRIMINAL himself!

Boy he sure did tail it out of there in a hurry, didn't he?

And noticed\ how snowjob ignored Colbert and turned his back on him numerous times after the event when everyone was reaching toward Colbert to shake his hand and talk!

The discomfort level of the repukes in attendance was PRICELESS!

23. Someday, I KNOW Colbert will be revered as a "picture of courage".
I am on the road of journalizing all the "pictures of courage" who are being ignored, condemned, ridiculed, destroyed.

Someone, someday, will value this journal of mine which includes all the "cyberspace" human beings who were a part of that journey.
