Poll question: COLBERT POLL: Want To Thank Him? Bouquets for Colbert?
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 08:56 AM by Dunvegan
I know how extraordinary Helderheid's "Roses for Helen" campaign was earlier this month...and what an extraordinary coordinated cross-country effort it also was.

I have a sister-in-law who is rather close to New York, living in Peterborough, Ontario, who is one of the seven master florists of Canada. She goes into NYC often (last time she actually bumped into Kerry, and told him she supported him.) I think I'd start there.

I believe in "tipping points" and I think Helderheid's "Roses for Helen" had a ripple effect in it's support and defense of Helen Thomas both in the Beltway and beyond. Not to mention the lift it gave Helen in her long struggle to just get the critters to tell the plain truth.

Here's my question: Anyone interested in participating in a tribute for Stephen Colbert in recognition of his effectively speaking truth to power at last night's White House Correspondents Dinner?

Perhaps, a tasteful use of golden flowers, formed into a huge "muchos huevos grandes floral arrangement."

I'm fully aware of how much work this could be, but I'm feeling energetically grateful regarding the masterful communication with which Colbert seared the Administration and the passive press, on behalf of the country and the people who cannot get any of our concerns across to the president.

Anyone else? Any other ideas?

BTW: The e-mail address of the webmaster for Colbert Nation.com (which is the unofficial web site of Stephen Colbert run by Comedy Central) is webmaster@colbertnation.com

11. Habitat for Humanity donations, earmarked for Katrina survivors
I liked Stephanie's idea, but donating to the rebuilding of homes for Katrina survivors would be yet another jab at BushCo. Money well spent I'd say... the gift that keeps on giving.

12. yes that's a good idea
except that king george loves to exploit habitat for humanity as a photo-op. he pretends to work for a few minutes, takes a photo and splits. jimmy carter actually spends time and works on the house. but in some ways that is the perfect gift. it fits colbert's persona as donating to a cause bush believes in, even those bush's involvement is fake. it all sort of works in the Colbert way.

20. Indeed it does
We know Bush's efforts w/ HFH are as fake as he is.

I wonder if a mass donation in Colbert's name would prompt him to do a "mock" photo op at a construction site, ala Bush... that would be funny... in the end showing him rip off the work clothes with disgust, order his crew to break down the "set"...

It could work.

we give him gold. Collect as much money as possible, and buy gold coins with it. Even one fine gold coin will be well remembered. If we can only afford one, perhaps it could be framed with a remembrance placque from DU.

33. The roses for Helen were sweet but the gesture is diluted every time it is
duplicated.

These constant calls for gifts makes DU feel like an office where someone takes up a collection for every birthday and anniversary.

I will do what I usually do when I want to reward someone for a job well done. I will write a letter of commendation to their boss.

You start to dilute the meaning of a gesture after a while. Let's celebrate what he did without looking like sycophants.

Send him an email. I'm sure he's already getting plenty of praise.

Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 04:44 PM by marions ghost
there must be some somewhere....

Charities are a nice idea, but I don't know if we need to do all that just to say *Thanks* to Stephen Colbert.

Balloons would be relatively cheap, and in the same spirit as the roses. I think he'd get a big kick out of them. But they really should be blimp-shaped balloons. This gesture should be humorous.
