Bush said there was “no evidence” of price-gouging of consumers.

Sorry, I know this is all pretty anti-climactic, and we saw this coming a mile away, but...

WASHINGTON – President Bush on Friday rejected calls by some lawmakers for a tax on oil company windfall profits, saying the industry should reinvest its recent gains into finding and producing more energy.

“The temptation in Washington is to tax everything,” Bush said in an exchange with reporters in the White House Rose Garden. “The answer is for there to be strong reinvestment to make this country more secure from an energy perspective.”

With gasoline at over $3 a gallon in some areas, Bush said there was “no evidence” of price-gouging of consumers.

When I lived in Florida several years ago, there was a manhunt by the local and state patrol near where I worked. (I don't remember why they were chasing him, maybe he robbed some place) Anyway, he left his car and they chased him into a wooded area. It's amazing though with conservatives and their anger to wards government power get all warm and fuzzy over corporate power. The same inefficiencies and bloated bureaucracies are in place, only at a private level.

The gouging is certainly not happening at the retail level, 'at the pump' where the gas station owner/operator makes a marginal living with fierce competition. The gouging is happening way back up the food chain.
