The Corporate Control Of Society and Human Life

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article12842.htm

Large transnational corporations are clearly the dominant institution of our time. They're preeminent throughout the world but especially in the Global North and its epicenter in the US. They control or greatly influence what we eat and drink, where we live, what we wear, how we get most of our essential services like health care and even what we're taught in schools up to the highest levels. They create and control our sources of information and greatly influence how we think and our view of the world and them. They even now own patents on our genetic code, the most basic elements of human life, and are likely planning to manipulate and control them as just another commodity to exploit for profit in their brave new world that should concern everyone. They also carefully craft their image and use catchy slogans to convince us of their benefit to society and the world, like: "better things for better living through chemistry" (if you don't mind toxic air, water and soil), "we bring good things to life" (for them, not us), and "all the news that's fit to print" (only if you love state and corporate friendly disinformation and propaganda). The slogans are clever, but the truth is ugly.

Snip………………

As corporations have grown in size they've gained in power and influence. And so has the harm they cause - to communities, nations, the great majority of the public and the planet. Today corporate giants decide who governs and how, who serves on our courts, what laws are enacted and even whether and when wars are fought, against whom and for what purpose or gain. It's for their gain, who else's, certainly not ours. Once we start one, they can even make profit projections from it like on any other business venture. For them, that's all it is - another way to make a buck, lots of them.

1. Unfortunately, they keep getting richer and bigger
Once upon a time, there were gigantic, over-powerful industries in America, like the railroads and Standard Oil. Many of these companies were deemed illegal, and they simply reorganized. Legislation was passed, and they changed the look of the monopoly, time and again. The government eventually seemed to get them under fair control. Not completely, but pretty well. Ma Bell was a big thorn in the side. But then in the 70s we started this wonderful trend called "deregulation." This is something of a code-word for "laizes faire" economics. Now you can scarcely even go to a ball park that isn't named for some big old company. They get gigantic "pork product" contracts. They OWN most of our representatives, the White House, and a good chunk of the SCOTUS. They have virtually Americans dancing to their tunes, eating their foods, driving their cars, wearing their clothes. I am not sure what we can really do about this.

6. I stopped watching the football Bowl games when they .
started changing them to corporate names. Just not as fun watching (example) the FedEx Orange Bowl or Nokia Sugar Bowl as it was when it was the Orange Bowl or Sugar Bowl.

3. Michael Ruppert's "most important speech"
Edited on Sat Apr-29-06 06:30 AM by teryang
is published on copvcia.com. While he is given to hyperbole at times the speech is interesting because it attempts to surpass politics as well. Conventional politics and persuasion fail in a time of crisis. His focus and that of the authors he cites is on individual and community survival. The "paradigm" of modern economic growth is finished. The overwhelming majority of people just don't realize it yet.

10. It certainly does transcend politics in the sense that it isn't just......
....a Democratic problem, or just a republican problem but rather an issue for everyone regardless of social class, income, career, etc. In that sense it most certainly does transcend politics.

11. Democrat and Republican are restricted and narrow versions of "politics"
Politics is the collective organization of society. In that sense, it does not transcend politics in the least bit.
