L.A. Organizers Denounce Black Minuteman
LEIMERT PARK — A coalition of community activists from diverse backgrounds came together in Leimert Park Wednesday to denounce homeless activist Ted Hayes’ recent alliance with the ultra-conservative Minutemen Project as a means of battling illegal immigration.

During an afternoon news conference at the Lucy Florence Coffeehouse, activist Najee Ali said he believed Hayes is being used as a pawn by what he called a racist faction that never has affiliated itself with the black community until now.

“Ted Hayes and his involvement in the Minuteman group is certainly an issue that we should be concerned about,” Ali said. “We feel that will polarize the communities. It will bring us farther and farther apart instead of together collectively to talk about tolerance, peace and resolution.”

3. Yep! I just notice he is a Republican

Hayes, a Republican, his newly formed Crispus Attucks Brigade, and some of his Minutemen allies held a forum Sunday in Leimert Park

4. How similar
Of the Mexican member of the Minute Men I saw on the Chicago news yesterday afternoon. If memory serves me, I believe the proper term is "Tio Tomas."

MR. GIRON: Buenos tardes. Good afternoon. My name is Julio Giron. I’m a resident of the County of Los Angeles, City of Bell Gardens most of my life. And I’m helping Jim Gilchrist to be elected....
....I think because the gentleman here talk about the so-called founded fathers, I respect, because I’m a United States citizen and I’m proud of being a United States citizen. I will utilize something that somebody that I really respect a lot say before the 9/11 Commission, meaning Dr. Condoleeza Rice. Those founding fathers didn’t include me ____. And I put myself there, because for the most and I respect Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Theodore Roosevelt, they were not like me, Latinos. And a proud United States citizen ____ all different complete history of this ____.

8. Yup. Notice how he slams only DEMS in that story?
“I’m realizing that illegal immigration is taking away the resources of the homeless,” Hayes said. “The Minutemen are right. They want to help the homeless. I can’t get Jesse or Maxine Waters to work with the homeless. Who’s helping me? White people.”

(As opposed to all those Repubs who do SOOOO much to help, right Ted? :sarcasm:)

And then we also learn that his group has had violent confrontations...
not with racists or homeless-haters; just with other homeless advocacy groups.
Homeless advocates who just happen to be LIBERALS.

And now he's cozying up to a group of xenophobic caucasian vigilantes;
why am I not surprised?

BTW, RSS: welcome to DU!

6. Although Hayes is a bit of a crack pot, he has done good
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 01:30 PM by Cleita
trying to rally help for the homeless and to shine a light on their mistreatment, but he's really way off base with this. I think he needs to be shown some facts about the Minutemen and their ties to white supremist groups and the KKK before he throws in with them. If he doesn't see the light then about this then I think he's as big a racist as they are.

The mental gyrations this man must go through to believe all that he spouts are mind boggling. See the picture of him with Karl Rove.

9. Thanks for the info.
I didn't know that much about him other than what I see on the news. I thought he was weird. Now I know why.

11. KKK David Duke started the Minute Man project back in early 80's..
during Reagan's administration, which was the last time this matter became such a "crises" (canard) ...

this has the FBI and the intelligence community's fingerprints all over this actually... it's exactly the kind of tactics they've been so successful in conducting on their overall strategy to divide and essentially bust down organizational alliances that threaten the Fascists Corporatists. (gee is it any wonder?) this goes back to the 60's and 70's with infiltrators and agent provacateurs - it really doesn't take much, especially in a society where racism and bigotry is so strongly cultivated and obviously highly valued.
