1. ?????s Re:Humane Society link
First of all, thanks to sfexpat2000 and mogster for getting KU up and running! I have a problem with the Humane Society of the US featured so prominently. Post-Katrina their actions and policies have been controversial and I personally don't think they should get any more donations that could go directly to the Gulf Coast groups helping animals. Of the big, national groups, Best Friends has really stepped up and they are STILL working to reunite people and their animals. Just a few suggestions (Yikes, I've a bunch more, but this isn't Katrina ANIMAL Underground! Maybe shireen has some ideas too?):

ANIMAL RESCUE NEW ORLEANS

SOUTHERN ANIMAL FOUNDATION

3. Thanks, egadsbrain
We need to discuss this a bit perhaps? Maybe find the most effective org who does animal rescue in the area, then promote them.
I like that pic on the http://www.animalrescueneworleans.com btw ;-)

Looks like they're getting thankful human clients. And probably that cat also was happy that someone helped.

I'm in no position to judge which org does the best job, so you people will have to decide :-)

8. Humane Society Petition
Here are some of the questions being asked on the petition-

We are asking the Humane Society, U.S. to come clean about their Katrina efforts. Why are they refusing to release paperwork to rescuers to help reunite owners? Why are they boasting about the 2,000 reunites of other rescuers, instead of telling the truth about the pitifull number they actually accomplished all by themselves. Why did they go on NPR in November and give out the 800 number hotline, when they knew the line was already disconnected?

Why won't they give us exact instead of estimated figures of how much they actually spent on Katrina, and not just lump it in spent and projected. How much money did they really raise. What did they do with it. Why did Wayne Pacelle say it was not their place to rescue while publicly soliciting funds for rescue. Who gave them the legal right to take ownership of family pets and decide a date when the families couldn't have their pets back.

I think the local group "Local Animal Rescue New Orleans" was and continues to do amazing work on the ground. That's http://www.animalrescueneworleans.com, formerly called ARNO, that turned the operation over to local people who are feeding, trapping and organizing. I love that photo too, mogster... anyway just my 2cents!

4. Thanks, mogster!
I really like the way you set up the News page. It looks great and it's super easy to use.

We need a collection mechanism. Maybe I can keep a thread like this going for people to post their finds and treasures to.

And here's one link: www.katrinaontheground.com

That's a group that is recruiting college kid to work in the community -- right now, during Spring Break -- and I think we should keep an eye on them. :)
