Welcome everyone! The NEW Hurricane Victims Group is HERE!
Our Mission Statement:

The DU Hurricane Victims Group is a place for DU members from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South-west Texas, and Southern Florida and elsewhere who are or have been victims of the recent Hurricanes to check-in, meet each other, trade accounts, offer advice or just show support for their fellow victims. It is also a place for posting Hurricane related news stories, which seem to have been bumped from the front pages, if they are still being reported at all.

Welcome, and if you'd like, thank Skinner for creating this group for us here or at at this thread:

1. I'm good to go. And I want to take the lead from you all
who are there. Grateful for this forum because now this horrible helpless feeling can be turned around.

I will fund the reg and hosting for a web site.

Who do we have that can put it up?

2. Hey, thanks for being here

That's an interesting idea, here's another: Just about every ISP (Internet Service Provider) gives their customers some "Web-space" for creating a few personal web pages, maybe we could all create One web page each on this topic, then link them together (through html links)?

Just an idea, throwing it out there.

5. Great idea! We have a little site for Doug's comedy.
Let's not forget this, in the certain rush of ideas to follow. :)

It would be easy to add another. I've been thinking of doing so for a while now.

10. Ask symbolman or benburch about the site design.
But then, I really don't know what you want the site to do.
I am not sure what you have in mind.

There is this site about payment of insurance claims. www.pay-our-claims.com.

14. I was thinking the site could be a base for our actions
A place where anyone could go and look to see how they could help on any given day. "Who are we calling today and why" -- so if you have an extra five minutes, you can easily be part of the effort.

We could also set up "adopt a family" or even "adopt a town".

We could set up a "report card" system -- solicit reports from people, good and bad and post them. I did this with mental health services some years ago. It worked really well.

And, I'm sure other DUers have ideas as well.

3. Excellent and thank you.
What's going on on the south coast will continue to affect us all for a long long time, even if we don't live there. Thank you so much for this.

7. It might sound odd to say, but I hope so.
I can't tell you how many times I've posted Hurricane related stuff, only to see it drop off the front page of the GD forum with few, if any, replies.

Thanks for your interest. :pals:

Don't forget to add it to your "My Forums" list too.

11. They recently made it easier so that even I could figure it out, here how:
Click on the link at the top of this page (in the gray area) that says:

Home> Discuss> DU Groups> Lifestyle, Peer Support & Self-Help> Hurricane Victims Group

Click on the part that says Lifestyle, Peer Support & Self-Help>, then look to the right, one of the columns says "Add to My Forums" and that's it.

Here, I'll make it even easier by giving the link so all you have to do is click the "Add to My Forums" part:

26. Pretty good.
Still can't get anyone to even look at our damage ... but it's not structural, so we can live with it. I read that most people aren't going to put their screens back up. That should give all the screen companies plenty of extra time.

The homeowner's association is assessing everyone to pay for the damage to the neighborhood. I can't wait to get out of this association! We just finished paying about 6 years' worth of special assessments so they could remodel the pool (I never go over there, so haven't even seen it). Now we get a new one. Can't really complain, though. We were lucky compared to many.

28. Hi AirmensMom
After Hurricane Wilma, I hung out in the Florida Forum and it was great to see other people made it through the storm OK. I live in a Mobile Home Village and we were lucky. There are other people in our park that lost everything. They just removed 3 homes that were totally destroyed. It took them a month and half to get a FEMA trailer in here. I thank God everyday that we are OK. And I thank God for DU!:loveya:

27. I'm not a survivor, or even southern, but can I hang out anyway?
I'm trying to get back to Mississippi to do some different, long-term relief work.

I wasn't directly affected by the hurricanes, but for whatever reason, I am drawn to walk with you all as much as I can. :grouphug:

31. I'm not really sure
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 09:59 AM by HeeBGBz
Basically, I'm just an available body.

I would like to help in most any way that I'm physically able. The thing is being able to cover bills I may still have at the time. I plan to have a van or camper that I can live out of. I also want to write/photograph and blog the experience. It's part of a long term plan I've been making that came more into focus after the storm.

As far as skills, they are non-specific. Non-degreed, but fairly able-bodied.

32. Hi intheflow
You may want to touch base with Lydia Leftcoast
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=5491061&mesg_id=5504876

She will be down here soon.

It seems it is the churches that provide the most assistance, with volunteer teams being sent down here constantly.

God love the volunteers.
