Help Survivors find their pets: 12/16-18
TIME URGENT INFORMATION:

12/11/05: Best Friends is hosting a “Locate Your Lost Katrina Pet” event in New Orleans from Dec.16-18

We know it has been difficult, or even impossible, for families who are missing their pets to navigate all of the available resources. This event will allow you to search in one place for your missing pets. We will set up banks of computers and give families the opportunity to work with reunion specialists to search for their pets – on a first come-first served basis.

Rescue groups, volunteers, and reunion specialists have also been invited to participate.

Where: Garden District Hotel 2203 St. Charles Avenue (corner of Jackson and St. Charles Avenues) New Orleans, LA 70130 University Conference Room

When: Friday, December 16 10:00 am – 6:00 pm Saturday, December 17 10:00 am – 6:00 pm Sunday, December 18 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

There is free parking in the rear of the hotel.
We hope you can attend!

From the Times-Picayune:

Robin Green was outside her house on Touro Street, near Elysian Fields, waiting. She had driven in from her new apartment in Houston just for what was about to happen.

The street was deserted, with debris and trash from gutted homes piled on both curbs. Bright pink and yellow markings left by pet rescuers in the weeks after Hurricane Katrina were scrawled on most of the double shotgun houses.

On the house that Green shared with Floyd Williams before Aug. 29, someone from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had spray-painted "9/15 - 2K9." Translation: Two dogs were found Sept. 15, and left with food and water. A second note, with a smiley face, read: "10/8 Cocker rescued." The fate of the second dog, a Chihuahua,, was not recorded and remains unknown.

But this December morning the "cocker," a lively black cockapoo named Chico, was coming home.

"I thought we'd be gone three days," said Green, stating a sentiment expressed by virtually everyone who evacuated in the face of Katrina.

She left enough food and water for her dogs for those three days . . .

When the levees broke, as everyone knows, everything changed.
