Melissa Rivers disturbing comments...
...on QVC of all places.

Late last night, dh and I were about to watch a movie rental. He's popping the popcorn, setting up the dvd while I was signing off the computer. QVC was on, and I wondered aloud why Joan Rivers jewelry was on AGAIN. Dh distractedly looks up and asks if that's Melissa Rivers sitting next to the qvc hostess. It took a minute but I realize it is her--though she looks and sounds much different from the last time I saw her (a few years ago on their E! show).

We're just about to switch the tv over (to the setting required to view dvd's), when we hear the most bizarre thing.

QVC host--"this is a lovely pair, sure to complete your summer wardrobe" (blah, blah or something like that...)

Melissa Rivers--"...these are the perfect to wear when you want to be that little slut down by the pool."

:wow:

Dh and I turned to each other at the same time,"Did she just say...?" "...slut...by the pool?!" OMG!

Um, what aspect of Miss Rivers Hollywood lifestyle equates woman to slut? And why would anyone buy jewelry in order to be thought a 'slut'?

As confused and angry as I was that she said that, I felt even worse for the show's hostess. She looked genuinely shocked, embarassed and even said, "...well, um I wouldn't say...um....that...but uh..." and then recovered and turned her attention back to the earrings.

:wtf:

Melissa used to seem much "nicer" and more "mellow" than her mom. She never seemed to go for the juggular the way Joan did. I was sad to see her looking and sounding like a pretentious Hollywood, socialite stereotype--complete with snooty intonations, awful faux tan and teeth so white they look fake. Every other word out of her mouth was "fabulous" or "amazing." :eyes: Sorry, but women that talk like that really put me off. They seem just like the rest of the Hollywood tribe, trying to lure you in to buying their overpriced wares so you too can look just like them. (((sigh)))No thanks. Remembering the softer, mellower Melissa made me kind of sad for her.

I don't know what to make of her vile slut comment. :puke:

1. That is really sad.
I wouldn't know Melissa Rivers from anyone on the street, but I know she's the daughter of a celebrity who has made a career with her mom trying to hold onto celebrity. I imagine that kind of life, focusing so much on making yourself the center of attention, can really deteriorate your empathy.
:(

2. I tend to feel badly...
...for those born into celebrity. In many cases, it's not a life the person ever would have chose for themselves. I wonder if Melissa would have pursued a "Hollywood" career, had her mother not been a celebrity. Perhaps she pursued that life as she knew nothing else. I've heard her speak of how her mom's career was the focus of their lives for many years. Or maybe to be close to mom.

Either way, she seems very "hard" now. A woman that refers to a woman as a slut, like it's a good thing , has got to have some issues.

3. Could be pure snark
As in "you got it flaunt it" or Don't be hatin'" in other words, someone with the confidence to "be that little slut by the pool" is going to know she'll turn others green with envy, 'cause she looks so good, you know? And she'll have all the boys around.

Either way a disturbing attitude.

Being attractive is one thing, using sexuality-as-commodity as our young women are taught to do, is or should be, a whole different game. The two seem inseparable at this point. Women still gage their attractiveness by how desirable they consider themselves. It's sad, but not surprising someone like Melissa Rivers promotes this bullshit, I mean has she known anything else? Not that I know what's in her head, but a lot can be surmised by the public attitude of celebrities.

4. Bet she got herself a new agent who is
telling her the way to get on TV and increase her pocketbook is be 'dirty.' Making women nothing more than receptacles is mainstream.

5. Isn't that how her mother found fame and fortune...
...by trashing Elizabeth Taylor? Talking about how fat she was, and making jokes at her expense?:eyes:
I guess that saying about the apple and the tree may be applicable here.

6. Joan always put herself down....along
with other women. Yep...that's how women comediennes made it. I want this to change so badly...look at Rosie...she doesn't do that.

I always turned Joan off....she depressed me...never made me laugh.
